Major takeaways from SEC football in Week 4

While Arkansas football prepares for Texas A&M, let's look around the SEC football landscape after Week 4. September is over and October is here. What are the main lessons to take from the past weekend of SEC football?

1 – Jon Sumrall and Buster Faulkner know what they are doing at Florida

The head coach hired the right offensive coordinator, and that can mean so much for a new regime. Jon Sumrall breathes competence and awareness. He seems to have a firm grip on a Florida program which is restoring the swagger and quality of previous head coaches. It has been a rough ride for Florida since Urban Meyer left, but Sumrall and his OC, Buster Faulkner, are hitting the mark in Gainesville. Florida has a real chance to make the College Football Playoff.

2 – The Ole Miss defense is not ready

Ole Miss gave up a bunch of points to Louisville and a bunch more to Florida. Pete Golding has to find a way to contain opposing offenses, or Trinidad Chambliss won't get back to the playoff this season.

3 – Texas still doesn't look the part

Texas is winning, but the Longhorns are doing it in a very ugly way. Arch Manning isn't fooling – or impressing – anyone. This team is going to lose multiple games unless something changes quickly.

4 – A&M and Oklahoma weep

What a nightmare for the Aggies and Sooners. Their quarterbacks are destroying their seasons. They won't make the playoff and they have coaching staff changes to consider. Both programs need new offensive coordinators, for example.

5 – Mississippi State superstar

Kamario Taylor is the no-longer-hidden gem of the SEC. He just beat Missouri to keep the Bulldogs unbeaten. How high will his star continue to rise this year?

6 – Auburn remains ordinary

Auburn beat Vanderbilt but looked terrible doing it. The Tigers have a very long way to go under Alex Golesh.

7 – BeamerBall is bouncing out of bounds

Shane Beamer had to beat Alabama to undo the negative effects of the loss to Mississippi State. He couldn't do it. He probably won't coach South Carolina next year.

8 – Tennessee's offensive line is Swiss cheese

If the Vols had a remotely competent offensive line, they might be good … but they don't. This is the position group holding back Josh Heupel's program in 2026.

9 – Georgia looks like the best team

The Dawgs can do it on offense and defense. They are well-rounded. Kirby knows how to do this. It's all there for Georgia.

10 – We don't know a lot about Arkansas

Is this a bad team or an ordinary team? It won the two games it was supposed to win. It got blown out by two obviously superior opponents. We haven't learned as much about the Hogs as we might think. Let's see what happens next.
