Focus on the early part of the season when it pertains to the Auburn offense, has been on quarterback Byrum Brown. Something that has not gotten a lot of attention is the play of the wide receivers.
On Monday, assistant coach Kodi Burns spoke to the media and delivered high praise to the receivers.
“The biggest thing is that they proven that they belong in this league," Burns said.
Along with Brown, that was a big question surrounding the receivers coming over from South Florida. Burns can speak on what it takes to play in the SEC after his playing career at Auburn, which included being part of the 2010 National Championship team.
One player that has stood out in the group is Keshaun Singleton. He led South Florida last season with 50 receptions, 877 yards, and tied for the lead with eight touchdowns. Singleton has led the way this season for the Tigers with 268 yards on 22 catches and one touchdown.
"You look at a guy like Keshaun Singleton, who the moment is never too big for," Burns said. "(He) seems to make a play, and I talk about this all the time, I think games are won in moments, and you look at this Vanderbilt game this past week, right there right on key, a five-step route to really finish the game and close the game out and made a big time play with his hands."
In the Tigers' 21-15 win over Vanderbilt, Singleton had five catches for 38 yards. He had a really good performance versus Florida despite Auburn losing the game. He had seven catches for 99 yards and one touchdown. He showed his big-play ability with a 48-yard reception.
It is not just Singleton who is showing great ability, though. Chas Nimord is tied with Singleton with 22 receptions and 240 yards with two touchdowns. One of those scores occurred on Saturday versus Vanderbilt. I think Chas (Nimrod) is a guy that is really explosive, like I’ve been talking about. (He) can stretch the field vertically and is a really good route runner. Those two guys have done a tremendous job of showing up in this league and making plays," added Burns.
Auburn is going to need those players and others at wide receiver to step up this Saturday when Auburn travels to Knoxville to face the Tennessee Volunteers. They will be facing a team that has proven they can stop the run, and a lot may be put on the shoulders of Brown along with his playmakers.
