The UConn Huskies football team has an important matchup this Saturday with the Syracuse Orange.

The two program rivals have met 14 times since the start of the century with Syracuse holding an 8-6 advantage. The Orange won last season by a score of 27-20 in overtime.

This year's version of the Orange are 1-2, but they are coming off a 15-day break that should have them rested and prepared for a Huskies team that is 2-2 and coming off a difficult loss against Miami (Ohio) last Saturday.

Once this contest is over, the Huskies will get to work on preparing for Temple. And we have some more information about that game, as it was revealed this week that the Huskies and Owls will play on Oct. 10 at 3:45 p.m. ET. That game will air nationally on ESPN U.

About Temple

A member of the American Athletic Conference, the Owls are currently 1-3 this season. They beat FCS Rhode Island (38-14) in the opener before losing to No. 16 Penn State (27-9), Toledo (49-48) and Army (21-17).

Had UConn head coach Jason Candle stayed at Toledo for this season, he would have seen the Owls in that Week 2 matchup, which was won by the Rockets in overtime.

Where UConn could have the scheduling advantage against Temple

If you're into the term "trap game," this matchup could be for you. Temple has already started AAC play, having lost to Army and they'll have another AAC matchup this week against South Florida.

UConn, a non-conference opponent, comes after that. Could the Owls overlook the Huskies as a result? Could they elect to rest certain players in order to save them for more importance conference matchups? It's all certainly possible.

Of note about this matchup 

This game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. That means that this will be, by far, the most prestigious venue that the Huskies play in this season. Temple plays all of its home games there.

One last thing of note

A report came out last week that UConn was interested in re-joining the AAC as a football-only member. That means that the Huskies and Owls would be league rivals. However, UConn athletic director David Benedict threw cold water on the idea with a recent social media post.

For now, the Huskies remain an independent on the football side.
