“How Much Value Does A Coach Create?”: Nick Saban Challenges Idea Of Putting Coaches And Players On The Same Pay Scale

Seven-time national championship-winning coach Nick Saban dismisses the idea that coaches and players should share a unified wage scale. The debate over college football compensation has escalated after the Protect College Sports Act cleared the Senate on Monday.
Under the new law, the NCAA gains the authority to implement a $50 million total salary cap, partitioning $22.5 million for player retention bonuses and a $5 million carve-out for women’s and Olympic sports.
The new law will also limit how much players can earn, but coaches won’t be subject to the same salary rules. A last-minute change to the bill sought to cap coaches’ pay at $5 million per year, which is much less than what many top college teams pay now. Even though this change didn’t pass, it started a bigger conversation about the pay gap.
Nick Saban Disagrees with Protect College Sports Act
While speaking on ESPN’s “First Take,” Saban explained that player compensation and coaching salaries operate in “totally different markets.”
“These things are totally different markets,” Saban said. “That’s like asking me, does a student’s scholarship equal the professor’s pay? How much value does a coach create for a university?”
“I think the better way to control that is contracts,” he said. “Rather than worry about amount of money people make, I think the thing that has been difficult is when coaches get fired, and they have these huge buyouts. And everybody says, ‘well how can the university afford to pay him that?'”
“I think you can figure, okay, you can’t have any more than a five-year contract or the buyout can only be so much.”
This morning on ESPN's First Take, Nick Saban argued player and coach pay are "totally different markets."

According to Saban, there must be a better way to approach it, although he acknowledged good things in the bill: “I’m all for players making money,” Saban said. “They still have name, image, and likeness as long as it’s authentic.”
“So there’s a lot of good things in this bill, and I think transferring multiple times does not help you graduate. So you still have an opportunity to transfer, but not every year, and you know there’s also a part of this that helps you retain the players on your team,” he added.
