Dan Lanning: Bob Chesney reached out about QB Dante Moore after injury

Some things are bigger than football, and UCLA Bruins head coach Bob Chesney made that clear on Saturday night.

Hours after the Oregon Ducks beat the USC Trojans in a game in which starting quarterback Dante Moore went down with a scary concussion and was taken to the hospital by ambulance, Chesney — the next coach on Oregon's schedule — reached out to Ducks head coach Dan Lanning in a moment of genuine care.

"He text me as they were traveling back to LA and said, 'Hey, if you need my help with Dante or anything and he's still in LA, I'll go check on this guy. I'm giving the team off tomorrow; let me know,'" Lanning said on 'The Jim Rome Show' Wednesday afternoon. "It speaks to the kind of person he is. I've got a lot of respect for him and his program."

This isn't the first time that Lanning and Chesney have crossed paths. Before Chesney took over the red-hot UCLA program, he coached the Jame Madison Dukes, who played in Autzen Stadium against Oregon during the first round of the College Football Playoff a year ago.

Oregon won that game 51-34 and would go on to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Orange Bowl, while Chesney would soon depart for Los Angeles to take over the Bruins. Less than a year later, the two are still finding common ground, though, this time ahead of a top-25 matchup in Autzen once again.

"It was unusual," Lanning said. "Pretty amazing. Great credit to Bob. And he didn't do it so he could hear me say it in an interview. It was genuine, and it's certainly appreciated. I've got a ton of respect for Bob and the way that he runs his program, and obviously, the results on the field speak for themselves."

Coming after a rivalry week between the Ducks and Trojans where behind-the-scenes video showed what Lanning thinks of the USC program — Lanning was quoted in this week's 'Ducks vs. Them' as saying, "There’s a difference in this locker room and that bulls**t locker room over there; there's a f**king difference. You let the world see in the second half. Let’s go kick their ass." — It's been quite a 180 to see the level of respect that he has for the next team on the schedule.
