ATLANTA — Georgia football under Kirby Smart continues to rack up the wins against nonconference opponents even if it’s not always so easy
The Bulldogs’ 16-9 victory against Georgia Tech on Friday Nov. 28 moved their record in nonconference games under Smart to 43-3.
Here’s how we graded Georgia in the game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Offense C-
Gunner Stockton threw an interception for the second game in a row and was just 11 of 21 for 70 yards. Georgia was stymied particularly on first down. Zachariah Branch had Georgia’s longest reception for 24 yards and its only touchdown for 7 yards. Josh McCray became a bulling ram to go with Nate Frazier in the run game.
Defense A
Georgia’s defense pressured from the start and forced a third down incompletion in the second quarter on a Daylen Everette blitz. The Bulldogs allowed 78 yards and 3 first downs in the first half. Georgia got a roughing the passer and pass interference late in the game, but did not give up a touchdown.
Special teams A
Peyton Woodring converted field goals of 22, 30 and 50. Sacovie White Helton had a 15-yard punt return. Brett Thorson had 4 punts for a 51.3-yard average.
Coaching C+
Georgia’s red zone offense got points but just one touchdown on 3 first-half trips. The Bulldogs had trouble generating yards against a Georgia Tech offense that had been gashed the last three games. The Bulldogs defense is playing its best ball of the season.
Overall B-
The Bulldogs controlled the time of possession and the running game complemented it in the first half and a defense that had two three-and-outs in the second quarter. Georgia will have plenty to correct watching the film but won’t complain about another win over the Yellow Jackets.
