The Morgan Scalley experience in Salt Lake City has been a rush. But there has been nothing more exciting than the Utah Utes' offense under new coordinator, Kevin McGiven. He has been cooking up outstanding games with Utah, never scoring under 31 points in the first month.

The Utes are highly ranked in several offensive categories nationally. Here are four to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

The battle in the trenches is being won

On the offensive line specifically, Pro Football Network ranks Utah No. 3 in the country with an 88.8 impact score. Talk about taking care of business. There were some analysts who said the Utes would struggle in the trenches because all five starters from last year were gone.

Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu were both first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, this year's group has thrived and found their way to being one of the best units in the country. This is an encouraging sign as the calendar flips towards December. Being able to open up lanes for Wayshawn Parker and others is the key.

The offense’s efficiency is outstanding

The Utes are tied for 12th nationally in scoring, averaging 43.2 points per game. They're also 15th in total offense with 491.2 yards per game. If Utah can keep this level of production up, they will force a three-way battle for a spot in the Big 12 title game. It’s a balanced attack by McGiven, who puts Parker out there to rack up yards.

Utah averages 225.8 rushing yards (21st nationally) and 265.5 passing yards (41st) per game.

Not bad for the way Devon Dampier has been used within the offense. Being able to have him and backup QB Byrd Ficklin on the field simultaneously creates a possible mismatch scenario for the Utes.

The Utes are ninth in third-down conversion percentage at 54.2 percent

This is one of the best stats, and gives a clear picture of how efficient the Utes' offense is right now. Dampier and Parker have been able to extend drives down the field, ultimately leading to points. Being ninth in the country puts them in a rare category. Not only are the Utes racking up points, but they are maintaining a time of possession as well. Don't get me wrong here. Utah has been able to capitalize on chunk plays. But when they're faced with a third down, being able to convert over half the time is huge for momentum.

Utah is doing it well in the red zone

Utah has scored 16 touchdowns on 21 red-zone attempts this season, which is a 76.19% conversion percentage and 26th-best in the country. McGiven is dialing up the right plays within the 20-yard line and it's working well. Being able to get touchdowns instead of settling for a field goal keeps the Utes ahead. One factor tied to this is being able to take care of the ball. The Utes have just two turnovers (one fumble, one interception) through four games, and are plus-five in the turnover ratio.

Utah is now a slight Big 12 title favorite, per ESPN's SP+. Dampier is a big reason for the Utes' success, along with the pairing of McGiven, who has brought out the best of his talented QB.
