The Florida Gators might be the surprise in college football through the first month of the regular season.

No one knew what the Gators would look like early in the season as first-year coach Jon Sumrall had the job of turning around a program that finished with a 4-8 record last year.

It's fair to say Sumrall has lived up to the hype so far, leading the Gators to a 4-0 record (the best start for the program since 2019) with wins over Auburn and a blowout of Ole Miss in Week 4.

Per the Gators' website, Sumrall earned national recognition for his efforts in September. He was named the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Month.

Sumrall immediately looked to Florida legends Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer to build his program in Gainesville, and results have been convincing through four games.

Florida has scored 214 points, the most under a Gators coach through four games in his first season. Sumrall owns the best scoring differential at +123 by a Gators head coach through their first four games.

Florida earned the No. 8 ranking before going on the road to play No. 25 Missouri, coming off a loss to Mississippi State in Week 4. That contest will be a challenge for the visiting Gators as they go on the road after riding the high of beating Ole Miss 52-28 at "The Swamp" last week.

Sumrall played a key role in getting Jadan Baugh to return to Florida, visiting the running back over the Christmas holiday. That coaching move has proven to be one of the most impactful efforts.

Baugh is second in the nation in rushing with 600 yards and 11 touchdowns on 83 carries, propelling him into the Heisman Trophy conversation before October. Baugh could be the key to getting Florida into the College Football Playoff this season.

Baugh has made life easier for quarterback Aaron Philo. The Georgia Tech transfer has been competent, throwing for 917 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions through the first four games. He's done enough through the first four weeks, though it remains to be seen what he can do if the Gators are trailing against an SEC foe in the second half.

Many Florida fans were bummed when the program didn't land Lane Kiffin last year. Frankly, Sumrall could wind up being the better hire, especially if he's given better resources next year.
