Early preview of No. 23 UCLA Bruins ahead of Oregon Ducks showdown

The Oregon Ducks are in the midst of a much-needed bye week, enjoying some time off after a strenuous and pressure-filled first month of the 2026 season. Through four games, we've seen the Ducks start at No. 2 in the AP poll, drop to No. 6 after an underwhelming win over Boise State before losing to Oklahoma State, dropping them all the way down to No. 21.

They then took care of Portland State, 84-0, moving them up a spot before a pivotal road matchup in Los Angeles with USC. The Ducks never blinked, even when quarterback Dante Moore had to leave the game via ambulance with a head injury, as backup Dylan Raiola and some timely defensive plays powered Oregon over USC, 41-27. It was as impressive of a win as we've seen from the Ducks over the past two seasons, and one that they badly needed in order to keep their goals of winning a national championship alive.

Now, Oregon gets to take a breath and relax with a Week 5 bye. But that's not all that the players and staff are doing, as they'll be getting a jumpstart on preparing for the upstart UCLA Bruins, who will come to town in Week 6.

We'll follow suit, providing an early deep-dive preview of how the Bruins' season has gone so far, a breakdown of the offense, defense, special teams and players to watch with game and betting details to boot. Let's start with UCLA's resume, as they head into the matchup with Oregon looking to continue their undefeated season.

  • Week 1: W 45-24 @ Cal
  • Week 2: W 28-10 vs. San Diego State
  • Week 3: W 52-38 vs. Purdue
  • Week 4: W 52-3 @ Maryland

The Bruins got off to an impressive start in the newly-hired Bob Chesney era, taking down the Tosh Lupoi-led Golden Bears on the road after a dominant second half. Chesney, who commanded James Madison to the College Football Playoff a year ago, relied upon several of his former Dukes that followed him to Westwood in the season-opener.

The start of the season was strong, and so was last game for UCLA. The Bruins went into Maryland and stomped all over the Terrapins, picking off four passes and racking up 475 total yards. The early, 10:30 PT start didn't hold them back, as they jumped out to a 20-3 lead at halftime and only added to the lead after the break.

Sandwiched between those two spectacular outings were victories over San Diego State and Purdue, with the offense carrying them in the former and offense in the latter, showing how well-rounded the Bruins are in 2026.

Offensive Breakdown

While last season was discombobulated at times for the Bruins offensively, new coordinator Dean Kennedy — coming over with Chesney from James Madison — has brought a revitalized, intelligent and, thus far, highly-successful offense to UCLA. Kennedy has a history of elevating previously subpar offensive units, as he developed quarterback Kyle Trask at Florida, turned Holy Cross into the Patriot League scoring leader and orchestrated the ninth-ranked scoring offense at James Madison in 2025.

Now, he's doing the same thing at UCLA with a spread-based system that emphasizes physicality and explosiveness at the point of attack. Kennedy's units have consistently been among the best at creating explosive plays, both on the ground and through the air.

While the Bruins won't go under center much at all, instead standing in the shotgun or pistol, they aren't afraid to run it right down the defense's throat. Through the air, the route combinations aren't necessarily complex, but they make it easy on the quarterback to read with a progression-based system.

Defensive Breakdown

Also brought over from James Madison, Colin Hitschler is the defensive coordinator for the Bruins with a goal of instilling an uncommon physicality that hasn't been seen in Westwood for some time. And thus far this fall, UCLA has, for the most part, lived up those goals.

The Bruins mostly operate out of a 4-2-5 defensive alignment, following the trend of opting to put an extra defensive back on the field over a lumbering linebacker. But make no mistake, the linebackers have plenty of talent to handle the middle of the field themselves, with a pair of seniors coming in at first and second on the team in tackles through four games.

Hitschler isn't afraid to send pressure, having loads of success against Maryland in forcing the quarterback to make decisions under duress that turned into four interceptions. Expect more of the same come Week 6, with Hitschler putting the onus on the offensive line to protect whoever trots out at quarterback for the Ducks.

Special Teams Breakdown

The Bruins have modest special teams units, with average kickoff and punt return marks with the same for the coverage units — though the return aspect could change in a blink with a pair of return men with elite speed waiting back there.

In the kicking game, kicker Mateen Bhaghani has been solid in converting 4-of-5 field goals and all 23 extra points. It's his third season as the starter at UCLA, and he's made 82.8% of his field goals with a long of 57 yards — a massive advantage at the college level. Punter Curtis Gerrand also has a big leg, averaging 45.7 yards per punt on 15 boots thus far.

Players to Watch

There's an abundance of talent across the roster, yet these three players will have to be accounted for by the Ducks if they're to get their fourth win.

QB Nico Iamaleava

2026 Season Stats: 62-for-99, 820 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs / / 35 rushes, 143 yards, 1 TD

Analysis: Iamaleava hasn't quite needed to show off his world-class athleticism this year, with his backfield mate stealing much of the thunder in the first month of the season. That's not to say the former Tennessee starter can't scoot, as he's run for 1,077 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons while tossing 38 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Not the most refined passer, Iamaleava — like many college quarterbacks — feasts on short and long throws, but hasn't quite developed the intermediate aspect of his game. Still very talented, Iamaleava is commanding mid-to-late round draft buzz, though he does have one more season of eligibility remaining.

RB Wayne Knight

2026 Season Stats: 49 rushes, 445 yards, 9 TDs / / 8 catches, 88 yards

Analysis: Yes, you read that right. Wayne has nine touchdowns four games into the year, with six coming in the first two games. Standing just 5-foot-7 and 193 pounds, Knight makes up for his lack of size with elite speed, vision and playmaking ability. At James Madison in 2025, Knight broke off runs of 73, 59, 58 and 49 yards with 57 and 49-yard gains on receptions. Always an ability to hit a home-run, the Ducks will have to be cognizant not to lose Knight behind the Bruins' offensive line.

LB Sammy Omosigho

2026 Season Stats: 37 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 forced fumbles

Analysis: Though the Bruins added 2025 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Trent Hendricks to the roster recently, he's still getting acclimated so we'll spotlight Sammy Omosigho here. The 6-foot-2, 239-pound four-year Oklahoma transfer has gotten off to a fast start at UCLA, leading the team in tackles and recording three sacks from his linebacker spot. Hitschler sends the former Sooner quite often on pressures and he makes plays as evidenced by his four forced fumbles in four games.
