Yale announced the passing of its former head football coach on Friday.

"Today, we are deeply saddened by the loss of an extraordinary member of the Yale Athletics family," said Yale athletic director Victoria Chun. "Tony Reno devoted his life to serving others and approached every day with humility, compassion, and purpose.

"He believed deeply in the power of mentorship and invested wholeheartedly in the success and well-being of his players, colleagues, and friends. While his accomplishments on the football field were remarkable, it is the relationships he built and the lives he changed that will define his enduring legacy."

Reno stepped down from coaching the Bulldogs in February due to illness. Many who interacted with Reno across his famous career in New Haven, Conn. paid tribute to him on social media.

How did Tony Reno die?

Yale did not disclose the Reno's cause of death. He stepped away from the Bulldogs in February after being diagnosed with an undisclosed illness.

Who was Tony Reno?

Reno was one of Yale's most successful football coaches, leading the Bulldogs to an 83-49 record and five Ivy League titles. A former Ivy League Coach of the Year recipient, Reno finished his glittering 14-year career with the second-most wins in program history.

Renowned for his leadership skills and commitment to his players, Reno leaves behind a legacy like few others in recent Ivy League football history.

"As a coach, Tony loved his players and held them to a standard they often didn't know they were capable of reaching," said Bulldogs head coach Kevin Cahill. "It was never about him or simply about winning championships; it was about developing young men and leaders and helping them become the best versions of themselves. Along the way, we won a lot of football games.

"Tony will be missed dearly. His impact on so many lives will never be forgotten, and his legacy will forever be a part of the Yale Football family."
