Pat Narduzzi is sick of the disrespect.
Much was made of the 4-0 Pitt Panthers and the 4-0 Virginia Tech Hokies playing each other unranked on Oct. 2. It will live on in ignominy as the first time two 4-0 teams from a major conference played each other with both unranked. In response, the two teams gave fans one of the most thrilling games of the early season, a 35-33 Pitt stunner that ended in a missed Hokies field goal that looked like it had a chance to have gone through.
After the game, Narduzzi knew exactly who he wanted to talk to.
"Wow. We've got a helluva football team," he said in his postgame on-field interview. "Now any of those voters out there, if they wake their asses up, they might figure that out. And I'll tell you what, we beat a damn good football team in Virginia Tech."
Early on, it seemed like James Franklin was going to announce himself and bring another program to the forefront. After the raucous "Enter Sandman" intro shook Lane Stadium, Virginia Tech jumped out to a 14-0 lead. But a sloppy rest of the game mixed with a stubborn Pitt team that endured the loss of starting quarterback Mason Heintschel led to a big Panthers win.
Indeed, the ACC's place in the current college football has been a hotly debated topic since the most recent NCAA realignment. But Friday night, it gave fans the only thing that really matters: A really good football game. And Narduzzi shouldn't have to worry about Pitt being ranked next week when it hosts Bill Belichick and North Carolina. At 5-0 with a good win, it's hard to fathom the Panthers being left out of the top 25 again.
