It feels strange to say this about a 4-0 football team riding a 20-game winning streak, but Indiana still hasn’t looked quite like new Indiana thus far in 2026.

The defending national champions are undefeated, ranked sixth in the country, and continue to stack victories, yet there’s still a sense that this team has another gear it hasn’t found yet.

Last week’s 29-23 victory over Northwestern was a good example. The Hoosiers won, but they were sloppy and left plenty to clean up.

IU left points on the field. It settled for a bunch of field goals, had a good chunk of penalties, and allowed the Wildcats to move the ball for stretches in the second half.

This feels like the point in the season where the Hoosiers realize they need to take a step forward if they want to keep to their winning ways.

Quarterback Josh Hoover has been steady thus far, completing 70% of his passes for 850 yards, 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

He’s not slinging it all over the field as he did in Fort Worth and should start to get more and more comfortable as the year progresses.

The rushing attack also offers some promise for this matchup against the Scarlet Knights.

Lee Beebe Jr. has rushed for 398 yards, while Turbo Richard has added 383 yards and four touchdowns of his own. That duo gives Indiana the ability to remain aggressive through the air with Hoover while still controlling games on the ground when needed.

As far as pass-catchers are concerned, the duo of Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh is as good as just about any in America, and both could be in line for big nights against a mediocre Rutgers secondary.

Just as last year, this defense is still the backbone of this team and what gives the Hoosiers another high ceiling.

While the offense gets the headlines, defensive coordinator Bryant Haines commands one of the best units in college football.

Indiana is allowing just 9.8 points per game, ranks among the national leaders in defensive efficiency, and consistently forces opposing offenses into uncomfortable situations.

Saturday’s matchup is especially favorable against a Rutgers offense that has struggled with turnovers and inconsistency at quarterback. Expect Haines to dial up pressure and for the Hoosiers to wreak Havoc on Rutgers early and often.

You knew it wasn’t going to be pretty in Piscataway when Rutgers lost its opener to UMass.

Other than a respectable showing against USC, things have continued to trend poorly since then.

There are very few Power 4 teams that you can pretty much eliminate from bowl game contention, but Rutgers is one of them. I’d be very surprised if this isn’t Greg Schiano’s last season in charge in what is simply just a really hard college job in today’s landscape.

If you’re looking for a bright spot, running back Antwan Raymond has rushed for 438 yards and four touchdowns this season while averaging 5.6 yards per carry, giving the Scarlet Knights a back capable of creating explosive plays if he gets into space.

KJ Duff can be dynamic on the perimeter as a receiver, but the offense lacks consistency in general, in large part due to poor quarterback play.

Dylan Lonergan has already thrown five picks and is barely completing over 50% of his passes.

On the other side of the ball, the Scarlet Knights have struggled to find answers against any real opponent.

Rutgers is allowing over 28 points per game and can’t stop the run. That becomes especially concerning against an Indiana offense that can beat its opponents in multiple ways.

When looking at the matchup against the Hoosier offense, it’s hard to see where the stops come from.

This number is large, but it’s justified.

Plenty of people will look at the Northwestern box score from last week and wonder if the Hoosiers are vulnerable.

I think that game was a great wake-up call for Curt Cignetti’s bunch. Elite teams often produce some of their best performances immediately after a lackluster outing, and I expect Indiana to arrive in Piscataway with a point to prove.

More importantly, I don’t think Rutgers has the horses to go blow for blow with the Hoosiers.

Indiana has the better quarterback, the deeper running back room, more offensive firepower, and one of the nation’s top defenses.

Rutgers has some talented pieces in Duff and Raymond, but there are simply too many areas where the Hoosiers hold a significant advantage.

It’s never easy to lay 20-plus points on the road, but Cignetti hasn’t exactly been shy over the years about wanting to keep his foot on the gas.

If Indiana establishes the run early and forces Lonergan into obvious passing situations, the game could get out of hand quickly.

Ultimately, I think this is the spot where the defending national champs remind everyone exactly who they are. Give me the Hoosiers big.

Pick: Indiana -24.5 (-120)
