Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has his Hurricanes in phenomenal shape heading into Week 5, as the Canes are fresh off a 52-3 beatdown over Central Michigan this past Saturday.
While Clemson has evidently fallen off over the last several years, Saturday’s matchup is still a tough test for Miami.
That said, the Canes have been untouchable so far this season, posting an average margin of victory that exceeds 26 points.
QB Darian Mensah has been unstoppable under Cristobal, ranking amongst the nation’s best quarterbacks across several metrics.
Mensah has thrown for a whopping 1,211 passing yards already, which ranks seventh in the nation.
The junior leads the entire country with 14 passing touchdowns and ranks atop all quarterbacks with zero interceptions and an exceptional 93.9 QBR.
A vital component to that success has been WR1 Malachi Toney, who’s quickly established himself as one of the premier wideouts nationally.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore has caught 34 passes for 564 yards and has found the back of the end zone six times, ranking top-five nationally in all three of those stats.
Miami tailback Mark Fletcher Jr. has also made a big impact for Cristobal, racking up 230 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.
While it’s the Canes’ offense that’s been stealing headlines, defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman’s unit has been remarkable as well, with opposing offenses collectively scoring just nine points per game on average.
DT Ahmad Moten Sr. was one of the highest-ranked defensive players heading into the season, though he’s actually played second fiddle statistically to the rest of Hetherman’s front seven. In fact, DL Marquise Lightfoot leads the charge with 17 tackles over the first month of play.
The Hurricanes’ secondary has also been extremely impressive, with three of Miami’s top-four tacklers being defensive backs.
I’m currently holding preseason futures tickets on Cristobal’s bunch to win the National Championship, and I fully expect Miami’s reign of dominance to continue into Week 5.
While Miami has been a model of consistency to kick off its 2026 campaign thus far, it’s been a very up-and-down first month of the season for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers, who fortunately enter this matchup with a 3-1 overall record.
After the 51-10 beatdown that LSU gave Clemson in Week 1, the Tigers have bounced back quite nicely over the last three weeks.
Despite an offseason QB competition that led to Christopher Vizzina initially winning the starting job over true freshman Tait Reynolds, the 21-year-old lost his role under center following an abysmal first six quarters.
Reynolds has been decent as Clemson’s QB1 since winning the job, throwing for 521 total yards.
That said, the first-year talent has thrown for just one touchdown, in addition to two interceptions.
The Tigers’ offense has relied heavily on sophomore RB Gideon Davidson, who’s rushed for 346 yards and three touchdowns at nearly six yards per carry.
Clemson’s receiving corps has been decent as well, with wideouts T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. both proving themselves as major downfield threats over the first four games of the season.
It was an uphill battle for Clemson this past offseason, as it replaced a defensive line that featured several NFL prospects, namely Peter Woods and TJ Parker.
While Swinney did a pretty good job replacing an elite front seven, the Tigers have largely struggled at the line of scrimmage, which became evident fairly quickly during the LSU loss.
Clemson boasts several high-impact transfers, like its three leading tacklers, Corey Myrick, Jerome Carter III, and Sammy Brown.
While many are backing Clemson to cover 16.5 points at home — which on the surface appears to be a comfortable margin to cover for an elite program playing at its famous “Death Valley” venue — I remain very skeptical about the Tigers ahead of Saturday’s ACC duel.
Though the Tigers have looked fairly impressive over the last three weeks, this is a massive step up in opponent difficulty. They’re facing a Miami team that excels on both sides of the football and very well may be the most complete team in the entire country.
I favor backing the Canes to cover the 16.5-point spread and will also be taking a shot on Toney to exceed 95.5 receiving yards.
Picks: Miami -16.5 | Malachi Toney Over 95.5 Receiving Yards
