The Houston Cougars may have finally perfected college football helmet design. They and the University of Central Florida Knights, two teams with ties to NASA, meet on Saturday in a game dubbed the “Space Bowl.”
The Cougars will be debuting some incredible new helmets as part of their Built By Houston series. This year’s “one-of-a-kind, hand-painted helmets” will take viewers around the galaxy.
The helmets look like astronaut helmets, with a planet reflecting off the visor. Via UHCougars.com:
On Saturday, Houston will debut a collection of unique helmet designs inspired by the solar system. The helmets progress from the Sun through Pluto, with each design becoming increasingly rare the farther it travels through the Solar System.
According to the Cougars’ website, 45 players will be representing the Sun and 23 will wear Mercury helmets. The numbers decrease to the point where only one player will have a hand-painted Pluto helmet. Take a look at these beauties.

Those are just great lids. Did you have any idea that players didn’t have to wear matching helmets? This feels like something Nike and the Oregon Ducks would have certainly tried by now.
For their part, UCF will also unveil a sharp new look for the game.
