The BTP Degeneracy Dungeon, Week 5

Welcome back once more, college football. Let’s get to it.
The Obligatory Bet Against UNC Of The Week
We’re rubbing our hands together in anticipation of a truly dungeon-worthy display of self-harm from UNC, which has an offense so bad that not even Bobby Petrino can do anything about it. Notre Dame is a 21-point favorite and might easily cover this one with a 34-7 final or something like that.
Are We Betting NC State This Week?
Speaking of self-harm, there are limits here in the dungeon, believe it or not. And after being extremely confident about a cover last week only to watch it disappear for no good reason, we’re keeping our distance from the Pack. Clearly there’s a decent team in here somewhere, but also a very stupid team in here everywhere.
Around The Country
Pitt +2.5 vs. Virginia Tech, O53.5: This worked out nicely but is in no way an example of shrewd insight, as Pitt was outgained by over 200 yards, finished +4 in turnovers, and still had to survive a 36-yard game-winning field goal attempt as time expired. Pitt also lost Mason Heintschel to injury in the third quarter—he was on crutches afterward, which is bad news. Still, Pitt: 5-0! Somehow Pat Narduzzi seems to do this all the time.
BC vs. SMU -21: The only thing that can make Boston College look competitive is torrential rain.
Alabama vs. Mississippi State +5.5: If you haven’t watched Kamario Taylor yet this season, it’s time to rectify that. There’s a good possibility that this is one of the most entertaining games of the day.
Navy vs. Air Force, O45.5: Betting on sports requires a certain sicko disposition, and among the habits we can’t get away from is betting the over on military academy games. These teams are going to run the ball 100 times, but they also both have dreadful defenses.
Auburn vs. Tennessee -6.5: Remember when NC State was inexplicably a finalist for five-star QB Faizon Brandon? There’s an alternate universe where Brandon is in Raleigh, State lets CJ Bailey walk, and spends the savings on defense. Would we be happier right now? We have no idea. Future NC State hall of famer Gunner Rivers is committed elsewhere because of this, so it’s best this scenario didn’t play out.
Eastern Michigan vs. UMass -6: UMass has been (and remains) a cautionary tale in moving from FCS to FBS—at 4-0, they have already matched their highest single-season win total since joining FBS. Now they appear to be destined for their first bowl game appearance, which is a great albeit minor story.
Marshall vs. James Madison -18.5: Marshall got smoked at Penn State in Week 1 and has won three straight one-score games, including last week’s one-point win against Gardner-Webb. You would not think it’d be possible to hide a horrible team in a 3-1 record, especially one that’s -6 in turnover margin, but Tony Gibson is a bit of a magician.
