As Kalani Sitake’s BYU football team enters the current college football season with strong momentum and a solid position in the national rankings, they have quickly garnered the attention of analysts across the country. After narrowly missing the playoff picture last season, legendary coach-turned-analyst Nick Saban recently highlighted the Cougars as the most impressive contender in the Big 12 during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
Traditionally, BYU’s success has been built on a balanced rushing attack and a physical defense. However, the offense has seen a significant shift. Saban emphasized the role of quarterback Bear Bachmeier as the key factor behind the team’s elevated championship aspirations. In a statement shared on X by College GameDay, Saban praised Bachmeier, noting, “[Bear Bachmeier’s] a much more efficient, effective passer in the pocket, and that means they’re going to be difficult to defend, regardless of who they play.”

This remarkable growth in the passing game has transformed BYU from a tough, run-heavy opponent into a multidimensional powerhouse that can effectively dissect any defensive scheme. With Bachmeier executing plays smoothly from the pocket, defensive coordinators across the Big 12 are finding it nearly impossible to stack the box against the run without leaving their secondary vulnerable to explosive plays downfield.
As the Cougars continue their rigorous conference schedule, maintaining high-efficiency quarterback play will be crucial for capturing the Big 12 title and securing a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff. With Nick Saban’s endorsement, all eyes in the collegiate world are on Provo to see how far this surging roster can go.
