Cam Fancher injury update: Michigan State loses backup QB vs Wisconsin

Michigan State football may have lost backup QB during the third quarter against Wisconsin in a Week 5 game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Fancher, who opened the second half at QB with the Spartans trailing 17-3, limped off the field with an apparent right knee injury on MSU's first drive.

On first-and-10 from MSU’s 45, Fancher scrambled for a 3-yard gain, diving forward when his knee appeared to go out without contact.

After a visit from the training staff, Fancher limped off the field, unable to put much weight on his right leg. After a visit to the injury tent, Fancher emerged without his helmet, visibly limping. A trainer then wrapped Fancher's knee, apparently signaling the end of his day.

Fancher, a well-travelled QB in his first season at MSU after transferring in from UCF, had been used by the Spartans as a chance-of-pace QB. He entered Saturday having completed seven of nine passes for 54 yards and an interception and having rushed for 14 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

It's more bad news for the Spartans, who were already limping into the game against the Badgers after a tough first four games.

Michigan State’s Cam Fancher throws a pass before the football game against Nebraska on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, in East Lansing.

The biggest issues are at linebacker, where captain Jordan Hall came in is listed as doubtful and fellow starter Brady Pretzlaff is among three considered questionable heading into the 12:30 p.m. kickoff against the Badgers (BTN).

Backup linebackers Dion Crawford and Cam Stodghill also are listed as questionable.

MSU coach Pat Fitzgerald said Monday that running back Cam Edwards will miss the rest of the season after the Connecticut transfer suffered an apparent right knee injury in the Spartans' loss.

At cornerback, starter Tyran Chappell is out after being a pregame scratch against Nebraska. Chappell, who was in the press box with a boot on his left foot and walking with crutches, was listed as questionable on the three weekly availability updates for MSU (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten).
