'Bryce Underwood just isn't it': College football world reacts to Michigan QB's poor game

Bryce Underwood arrived at Michigan last year with no shortage of hype, as a Detroit-area native who was the No. 1 overall prospect nationally in the 2025 class.
A Wolverines program that was fewer than two full years removed from a national championship had a potential star for the foreseeable future at the game's most important position.
Or so that was the thought.
Nearly halfway through his sophomore season, Underwood has failed to show meaningful improvement, and hasn't come close to the immense ceiling he was believed to have coming out of high school. Five games into the 2026 season, Underwood has just five touchdowns to four interceptions while overseeing an offense that has failed to score more than 20 points four times this season.
In a 20-14 loss at Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 3, he turned in arguably his worst performance of the season, completing just 47.6% of his passes and throwing for a season-low 101 yards. And he had arguably his worst play of the day when the Wolverines most needed him to live up to his high hype from high school:

Kyle Whittingham has to make a QB change at this point.
Bryce Underwood finishes 10-of-21 for 101 yards and two INTs.
And it looked worse than that. So many overthrows.

Bryce underwood could’ve easily ran for a first down and decided to throw a ham sandwich out of bounds to lose the game lmaooo pic.twitter.com/cc1zSLhtS4

This is where NIL has destroyed college football.
The only reason Bryce Underwood is not on the bench right now is because of how much money he’s making.

I’ll say this again and I’ll keep saying it, Michigan has a coaching staff problem, not a Bryce Underwood problem. Jordan Marshall was insane last year and look at him now… you’re telling me he’s just garbage all the sudden? Cmon man 😂

If I’m Bryce Underwood, I transfer to LSU and go win a national championship with a competent coach
You can’t leave your future in the hands of these people

The haters said Michigan sucks. The haters said Bryce Underwood can’t play. The haters said Kyle Whittingham couldn’t coach anymore.
Honestly, great call by the haters.
