Gus Johnson is facing backlash once again; only this time, it’s even worse.
During the Michigan vs. Minnesota Week 5 matchup at Huntington Bank Stadium, the FOX announcer was behind the mic, calling the action. But the veteran announcer seemed to make several apparent mistakes while identifying plays.
In one of the more noticeable moments, Johnson appeared to call the play as though Michigan’s Savion Hiter had the ball and was running with it.
In reality, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood had kept the ball on the option play. Many viewers questioned the accuracy of his commentary throughout the game.
Fans Have Had Enough of Gus Johnson’s Commentary
One X user annoyingly noted, “I’m not sure this is even a hot take these days, but Gus Johnson is unbearable to listen to on football broadcasts.”
This isn’t the first time Johnson has found himself taking heat for his commentary. Just earlier this week, he was criticized for a similar reason during the Ohio State-Illinois game.

And even before that, viewers had plenty to say about his call during Ohio State’s 59-3 blowout of Kent State, with some feeling his usually energetic delivery sounded unusually flat and annoying.
And so, this time, fans couldn’t take more of him.
“Gus Johnson is long past his expiration date in my opinion, but I enjoyed him calling the Minnesota RB a whirling dervish.” one viewer commented.
Johnson has served as FOX Sports’ lead college football play-by-play voice since joining the network in 2011.
“Gus Johnson isn’t even watching the game. Bryce Underwood clearly kept the ball, and he thinks Savion Hiter has it and is still running,” Chad Fisher of DNP Sports stated.
The Savion Hiter moment had some fans urging Johnson to step away from the booth.
“Gus Johnson is awful,” another fan commented, to which many agreed.
“Gus Johnson is the Russell Westbrook of broadcasting,”said another viewer. According to fans, Russell Westbrook plays basketball like he was shot out of a cannon, attacking the rim with a level of ferocity that feels unsustainable for 48 minutes. Gus Johnson calls games with that exact same velocity.
Johnson has never been the type to keep things low-key. Whenever a game gets chaotic, his voice naturally tends to match the intensity. While some viewers love that energy, others find it extremely annoying.
