Ohio State football trounced Iowa 31-14 on the road in Week 5 action, leading receiver Jeremiah Smith to strike a Heisman pose and comment on the award afterward. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day shared what makes Smith “amazing” in comments that painted him as a future Heisman winner.

Former Heisman winner Robert Griffin III laid out his case for why the Heisman Trophy is Smith’s to lose in a statistical analysis and comments shared following the game.

“Right now the Heisman Trophy is Jeremiah Smith’s to lose,” he wrote. “Absolute cheat code. First five games of the season…8 catches, 151 yards, 2 TDs; 8 catches, 164 yards, 1 TD; 5 catches, 85 yards; 12 catches, 217 yards, 4 TDs; 11 catches, 206 yards, 2 TDs,” Griffin III said.

The Buckeyes star broke the team’s all-time receiving TDs record against the Hawkeyes while making his QB Julian Sayin also look like a Heisman winner. The Buckeyes’ last Heisman winner was QB Troy Smith in 2006.

Smith’s 200-plus yard performance came on the heels of the Hawkeyes’ strong defensive effort in a miracle win at Michigan, making it all the more impressive. He torched a school known for the defensive acumen of coordinator Phil Parker in leading the Buckeyes to a quality win that will certainly impress the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The Buckeyes get Maryland on the road next followed by a huge test at Indiana against Josh Hoover’s Hoosiers. Ohio State likely has revenge on the back of their minds after their loss to Indiana in the 2025-26 Big Ten Championship Game, but know they must take things one step at a time in a rugged Big Ten Conference.
