Nov. 29—***

In terms of significance, it won't have the same weight as the game 24 years ago. But don't tell that to the current players. Or to quarterback Luke Altmyer, who continues to climb the list of the school's all-time best signal callers.

A win Saturday against Northwestern at home will help. And just like Hall of Famer Kurt Kittner in 2001, I'm calling for the same score: Illinois 34, Northwestern 28.

Those who were there in 2001, along with then-Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, remember the Wildcats had a chance to win in the closing minutes but overthrew a deep pass.

Illinois escaped to win the a share of the Big Ten title. It got the whole deal two days later when Ohio State upset Michigan. Funny how that end of it has changed.

Altmyer isn't going to be the All-Big Ten first-team quarterback. Too many Heisman contenders in front of him. But he can make sure buddy Hank Beatty ends up on the first team at receiver by throwing to him early and often.

In that 2001 game, Kittner threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns. On a normal day weather-wise, a repeat from Altmyer would be possible. But on Saturday, Altmyer will lead the way as much with his legs.

Eight wins in consecutive seasons will be a nice achievement for Altmyer, Hasn't been done at the school since 1989-90.

If you are going to the game, get their early to honor the seniors and bundle up.
