Stock up, stock down from college football Week 5: Missouri topples America’s hottest team

There were three ranked-on-ranked matchups in Week 5 of college football. All three of them were blowouts. Ohio State took care of Iowa, where College GameDay was, and both Alabama and Missouri crushed Mississippi State and Florida, respectively.
But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t action. For the second week in a row, Michigan was upset in Big Ten play. This time, the Wolverines suffered a loss to Minnesota on the road. It was Michigan’s first loss in Minnesota since 1977.
Here’s the latest stock up, stock down after Week 5.

Stock up: Eli Drinkwitz gets a big win
After a Week 4 loss to Mississippi State, Missouri hosted college football’s hottest team, but the Florida Gators were no match for the Tigers in Columbia. Quarterback Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards and three scores on the ground.
More importantly, Missouri snapped a program-record nine-game losing streak to ranked teams. Eli Drinkwitz wanted to prove that his team could contend in the SEC, and a 45-17 win over Florida did that. Star running back Jadan Baugh had 12 carries for 13 yards for the Gators, and the Tigers’ game plan of stopping the run worked to perfection.
Stock down: South Carolina and Shane Beamer
Things aren’t good for Shane Beamer, and it’s only getting worse. The Kentucky Wildcats have never won a game when they trailed by 17 or more points while playing on the road — until Saturday.
The Gamecocks got out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, and after rumors of benching starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers, he played well, but South Carolina’s defense fell apart. Kentucky would kick a field goal to go to overtime, and the ‘Cats would leave South Carolina with a 35-34 win.
Beamer and Co. had to suspend star edge rusher Dylan Stewart from the team after last week’s debacle against Alabama, and Beamer’s future with the Gamecocks could be in doubt.
Stock up: Florida State has some life
Don’t look now, but Mike Norvell survived another week. Florida State took down what we thought was a good Virginia team, 38-7. And it was the Ashton Daniels’ show.
Daniels didn’t do wonders through the air, but the former Stanford and Auburn quarterback ran for 136 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. The Cavaliers’ defense has no answer for Daniels, and the Seminoles move to 3-2 on the season.
Florida State is a few plays away from being 4-1, beating SMU was a possibility. FSU has upcoming games against Louisville, Miami, and Clemson, so we will learn a lot about this team and Norvell’s future.
Stock down: Bryce Underwood/Jason Beck
There might not be a more disappointing marriage in college football than offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterback Bryce Underwood. Once Kyle Whittingham was hired to come to Michigan, he immediately brought over Beck to become the coordinator.
Underwood was expected to improve. He did from Week 2 through Week 4, but Week 5 saw Underwood revert back to his old habits. Michigan suffered its second loss of the season, losing to Minnesota 20-14, and Underwood passed for 101 yards and two interceptions.
Beck is stuck in his Big 12 playcalling ways and won’t adjust to his personnel. Michigan can’t run the football and Underwood is too inconsistent to lead the Wolverines to victory. It’s chaos in Ann Arbor.
Stock up: Alabama looks for real
The Florida Gators might’ve been the hottest team in college football, but few teams were getting the limelight like Mississippi State, mostly due to quarterback Kamario Taylor. We wanted to see how the Bulldogs would play against a team like Alabama, and while Mississippi State is a feel-good story — it’s not there yet.
Alabama brought the hammer on the Bulldogs and left Mississippi with a 56-23 win. Keelon Russell continues to impress as a first-year starter under Kalen DeBoer, and he passed for 285 yards and three scores on Saturday. Taylor was picked off twice and Alabama recovered two fumbles.
The Tide will take on Georgia next weekend.
Stock down: Colorado quarterbacks
After a poor performance against Baylor in Week 4, Deion Sanders opted to bench former five-star gunslinger Julian Lewis in favor of Isaac Wilson. And he played well for a little while, but the turnovers reared their ugly head.
Wilson would throw three interceptions, including an interception in his own end zone that Texas Tech picked off for a touchdown. Wilson’s 290 yards and one score were overshadowed by mistakes, and Colorado suffered a 29-7 home loss to the Red Raiders.
Lewis wasn’t as turnover-prone as Wilson was on Saturday night, but it’s clear the Buffaloes have a major quarterback issue. Part of why Colorado is 2-3 and will struggle to make a bowl game.
