‘What the Hell Is Going on?’ ‘This Is Insanity’ — CFB Analyst Erupts Over Alabama’s No. 6 Spot in AP Poll After Week 5

Alabama did just about everything a team could ask for in Week 5, yet its place in the latest AP Poll still left some college football analysts wanting more. The Crimson Tide moved up only one spot after another convincing win, keeping them outside the top five despite an unbeaten record and a string of decisive victories.

For George Wrighster III, that was enough to question the entire order at the top of the poll. His argument centers on what Alabama has actually done on the field compared with the teams ranked ahead of it.

George Wrighster III Questions Alabama’s No. 6 AP Ranking

Following the Crimson Tide’s 56-23 road win over No. 16 Mississippi State, Wrighster argued that their body of work should have put them much closer to the top of the rankings.

In the caption accompanying his video on X, Wrighster made his view clear, writing, “There is NO WAY the AP voters have been watching college football this season if Alabama is ranked #6. This is INSANITY.”

He then expanded on that criticism in the video, asking, “The first question I got is, what the hell is going on with the Alabama Crimson Tide? How can you have watched college football all year and sit there and say Alabama’s not the No. 1 team in the country? How can you say that they’re not No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5 in the country?”

His frustration was largely tied to how Alabama, which is ranked sixth on PFN’s Offense Impact Metric, has handled its schedule. The Crimson Tide opened with a 48-10 win over East Carolina before beating Kentucky 45-17. They then defeated Florida State 50-36 and South Carolina 49-18 before taking down Mississippi State by 33 points in Starkville.

Wrighster pointed to those results while questioning why Alabama only moved ahead of Indiana, which dropped from No. 6 to No. 7 despite also winning in Week 5.

“Here is the AP poll from last week… Alabama came in last week, No. 7. The only people that they jumped this week was Indiana,” Wrighster said.

He also acknowledged that several teams ahead of Alabama have looked impressive. Ohio State, Miami, Notre Dame, and Georgia all remained in the top five, while Texas held the No. 1 spot. Still, Wrighster argued that each of those teams has weaknesses that should be considered when comparing them with Alabama.

“Yes, Ohio State. Yes, they looked really good against Iowa. Miami still looks really good. Notre Dame still looks really good. Georgia still looks really good too,” Wrighster said. “And Texas, flaws at the quarterback, all of this stuff. But all of these teams are flawed.”

The AP ranking now sets up a direct test of Wrighster’s argument. No. 6 Alabama will host No. 2 Georgia next Saturday in Tuscaloosa, giving the Crimson Tide an opportunity to challenge one of the teams currently ranked ahead of them.
