College football Week 5 is in the books, and we learned that the 2026 Florida Gators aren’t the 2019 LSU Tigers, that doubting the Missouri Tigers as a ranked team is unwise, and that Keelon Russell is very, very good at football. But what does this all mean for the postseason landscape?

The College Football Playoff first-round games will once again be held on campus and aren’t technically classified as bowl games. But for readers wondering where their favorite team ranks in our college football bowl projections, the Boise State Broncos, Missouri Tigers, LSU Tigers, and Oregon Ducks are the teams to fall by the wayside before the quarterfinals.

Two of the biggest games of college football Week 5 produced a significant narrative for our bowl projections. The Ohio State Buckeyes dismantled a strong Iowa Hawkeyes defense on the road behind the unstoppable Jeremiah Smith, and are now considered the frontrunners in the Big Ten, with a 33.5% chance of wrestling the conference crown from the Indiana Hoosiers.

That places the Buckeyes as the number two team in the country in our latest college football bowl projections, setting up a date with the Rose Bowl and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Kalen DeBoer’s team was imperious on offense against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, with quarterback Russell asserting himself as a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender. For as good as he was, the defense was instrumental in thwarting Kamario Taylor, and this Crimson Tide team is rounding into a dangerous proposition.

We’ll find out how good they can be in Week 6 when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart’s team has a 53.6% chance of beating Alabama, according to PFN’s College Football Playoff Meter, and that could set the tone for not just the race to the SEC Championship Game, but also limit the ceiling of where the Crimson Tide is situated in the final CFP rankings reveal.
