MIAMI, Fla. – It’s been three months since head coach Mario Cristobal announced edge rusher Hayden Lowe was no longer on the Miami Hurricanes roster; the former five-star signee has resurfaced on the Division I college football scene.
The Los Angeles (Calif.) native spent the 2025 college football season with the Coral Gables program. However, Lowe didn’t appear in any games as he underwent surgery for an undisclosed injury. After watching the Hurricanes carve out a historic run to the National Championship game from the sidelines, the redshirt freshman wasn’t present for spring practices. No details were provided or reported; Lowe was noticeably absent from the Hurricanes’ held media day at Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility a day before fall camp started.
Afterwards, the announcement was made in early August on The Joe Rose Show.

Lowe was projected to play a consistent rotational role on the Hurricanes’ defensive line, especially as Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. departed the program and were NFL first-round selections. He had a promising resume coming from Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village (Calif.): 159 total tackles, 88 solos and 71 assists, 42 tackles for loss, 24.5 sacks, 29 quarterback hurries, and two interceptions in four seasons (37 total games), according to MaxPreps.
Although no specific details were shared about Lowe’s sudden departure, a return to Power Four college football could be on the horizon. He visited Tennessee last Saturday as the Volunteers beat Auburn 24-14 at Neyland Stadium. Lowe reportedly plans to visit Alabama on Oct. 24, when the Crimson Tide face Texas A&M at Tuscaloosa.
While the Hurricanes are 5-0 (ACC 3-0) to start the season, the former top-100 recruit had enrolled at Long Beach City Community College in California. In three games, Lowe has logged five total tackles, four solos and an assist, four sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, and scored a touchdown off a fumble recovery against Santa Barbara in a 30-0 win on Sept. 19. He still has a ton of potential that has yet to be on full display.
Lowe could have pushed the Hurricanes’ pass rush even further; however, things didn’t go according to plan. It’s a significant jump going from junior college to the Southeastern Conference. However, Lowe has been gathering interest, which could result in an opportunity to regain five-star potential.
It could be the beginning of a major comeback for the 2027 college football season.
