Tight end was one of the strongest units for the Kansas State Wildcats entering this season.
On Monday, the unit got a little weaker.
During his weekly press conference, K-State coach Collin Klein revealed that tight end Will Anciaux is out for the remainder of the season due to a lower leg injury. It happened in the loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 opener.
A senior, Anciaux had six catches for 84 yards before the injury occurred.
The positive is the Wildcats are stacked at the position. They also have Garrett Oakley and Linkon Cure in the fold. Oakley is arguably the team's top tight end. He leads the team with 13 catches for 147 yards. During the preseason, Klein said Oakley was among the players most visited by NFL scouts.
There's also Cure, who is one of the most hyped players in K-State players. He is the first five-star recruit in program history. He chose the Wildcats over just about every school in the country, including the Texas A & M Aggies, Oregon Ducks and Penn State Nittany Lions. He has just three catches for 23 yards but the Wildcats are searching for ways to get him more involved.
The Wildcats would like to get all the tight ends more involved. When they are, it makes the offense more effective because it gives quarterback Avery Johnson more options. While Johnson is off to a strong start, more tight end involvement could be a huge bonus.
The Wildcats are coming off a bye week after losing to the Bearcats. They were ahead by seven at halftime before imploding in the second half. They were outscored 21-9 in the third and fourth quarters on the way to the first loss of the season.
Now, they must rebound against the No. 22 Cougars, who dropped two spots in the poll despite defeating the UCF Knights.
OTHER INJURY UPDATES
-Klein said receiver Jaron Tibbs had a good week of recovery during the bye week. There is no timetable on his return but there is a chance he could play this week against the Cougars.
-Freshman tackle Oliver Miller remains day to day with injury as do backup quarterbacks Blake Barnett, Dillon Duff and Jacob Knuth. The Wildcats only had one available quarterback against the Bearcats.
Expect for the Wildcats to update their status perhaps Friday morning or sometime before Saturday's game.
