The Colorado Buffaloes have lost three straight games under Deion Sanders, dropping to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play after a 29-7 home loss to No. 12 Texas Tech on Saturday. The Buffaloes held a 7-3 lead at halftime before giving up 26 unanswered points after the break.
The slump drops Sanders to 18-24 in his fourth season at Colorado following a 3-9 finish last year, landing him on national hot-seat lists. However, former Super Bowl champion James Jones pushed back on the criticism, warning that firing Sanders would trigger a massive roster collapse.
NFL star warns Colorado against dumping Deion Sanders
James Jones, who played nine seasons in the NFL and led the league in receiving touchdowns in 2012, won a championship ring as a key wide receiver on the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl XLV team. He bluntly said Colorado would lose 90% of its roster if it fired Sanders.
Highlighting the packed stadium, ticket sales, and national attention, he said, “If you fire him, you’re going to lose 90% of that team. You’re going to go back to being awful. You’re going to go back to not having no excitement. You’re going to go back to not selling tickets. All that’s coming if you fire Deion Sanders. So I think that’ll be the stupidest decision to let Prime go.”

“I HATE when people are not grateful. Before he got there, what were y’all? If you FIRE him, you gonna lose 90% of that team, and you are going to go back to being AWFUL”

Former NFL star LeSean “Shady” McCoy also strongly opposed a coaching change, questioning why critics would quickly forget what the coach brought to the university. He added that Colorado was irrelevant before Sanders arrived and cited Sanders’ health issues, asking fans to give the coach some grace.
Despite support from former players, the team’s losses continue to spark public backlash. Fans called for a coaching change on social media after Saturday’s defeat. Both Sports Illustrated and USA Today put Sanders on hot-seat lists. However, Sanders told reporters the score did not reflect his team’s true identity.
A midseason firing remains unlikely due to financial constraints. Sanders has a five-year, $54 million contract extension through 2029. Colorado would owe him a $25.5 million buyout if they fire him before the end of 2026. Athletic director Fernando Lovo holds the ultimate authority over the decision, though Sports Illustrated projects a mutual resignation after the season rather than an outright firing.
