South Carolina’s Shane Beamer gives telling Dylan Stewart update ahead of Gators matchup

Dylan Stewart was back in South Carolina’s 8 a.m. team meeting on Tuesday. It was his first time around the program since head coach Shane Beamer suspended him indefinitely after the Gamecocks’ 49-18 loss at Alabama on Sept. 26. He practiced later that day, and his availability for Saturday’s 12:45 p.m. ET game at Florida is still open.

“He was at practice today. His status for Saturday has not been determined. That will be determined as we go throughout the week,” Beamer said.

“Good question, I mean, I guess he’s not suspended from team activities (like last week),” Beamer said when asked if Stewart remains suspended.

“Dylan, he and I have had some really open and honest and tough conversations in my office over the last week, and felt like he had earned the right to at least reappear and be a part of the team this week,” Beamer said. “What that means as we go forward, I think it’s really truly day to day.”

Why Dylan Stewart’s SEC suspension no longer decides his status

The SEC and South Carolina jointly handed Stewart a one-game suspension for throwing a punch at Alabama tight end Josh Ford. He served it during the 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky on Oct. 3. Beamer’s indefinite suspension also covered two other moments from the Alabama game.

Stewart did not follow instructions to jog off the field after a defensive possession, and he refused a substitution when the staff tried to put freshman Julian Walker into the game.

Beamer again called all of it unacceptable on Tuesday. He also pointed out that Stewart is hardly the first player to throw a punch in a game or argue with his coach on the sideline. With the conference penalty served, the Florida decision sits with Beamer alone.

“My job as a head coach, I know, it’s to win football games, but it’s also to you know to help young men and help them grow,” Beamer said. “As I alluded to you guys last week, I’ve hoped that holding Dylan accountable and last week was a learning lesson for him, and that there was growth from that.”

South Carolina is 2-3 and 0-3 in the SEC heading into Gainesville to face a ranked Florida team at 4-1. That record puts the winning half of Beamer’s job description in direct tension with the accountability half.

Stewart missed the first two games of this season while resting a back injury that also kept him out of spring practice and most of the summer. He made his 2026 debut on Sept. 19 against Mississippi State. In two games before the suspension, he recorded one tackle, a tackle for loss.
