Jeremiah Smith is having an unbelievable season. The Ohio State receiver just might be the first overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Which team could he wind up going to?

Recently, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman put together a 2027 NFL Mock Draft. He has Smith landing with the Houston Texans first overall:

“1. Houston Texans – WR Jeremiah Smith

We’re starting off bold. Sure, if the Houston Texans actually end up with the No. 1 overall selection, passing on Arch Manning and the other quarterbacks would be easier said than done. C.J. Stroud would have clearly proven that he is not to be trusted long-term under center. With that being said, how can the Texans, or anyone for that matter, pass on a talent like Jeremiah Smith? It’s hard to pass on a quarterback for a wideout, but Smith is a generational talent, while such a thing doesn’t exist right now among this quarterback class.”

The Texans currently have a 0-4 record. But they’re probably too good to actually finish with the worst record in the league. That means a Jeremiah Smith-to-Houston scenario is highly unlikely, but not impossible.

Smith’s Career Thus Far

Jeremiah Smith attended Miami Central Senior High School in Miami, Florida, before transferring to Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, located in Hollywood, Florida. As a senior, he was named an All-American and won the All-American Bowl Player of the Year Award.

Smith was then the top-ranked prospect of the incoming 2024 college football class. He received offers from schools such as Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, and USC. Yet, he ultimately committed to play for Ohio State.

It didn’t take long at all for Smith to make an impact for the Buckeyes. He caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns during his college debut against Akron. Later on, Smith was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after recording six receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Then he was named the Rose Bowl Offensive MVP, as he had seven catches for 187 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns. Ohio State defeated Oregon 41-21 in that game.

Smith enjoyed an amazing first year at Ohio State. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Big Ten Receiver of the Year, and was a First-Team All-American. In addition, Smith broke the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision freshman receiving record. And oh yeah, he also helped the Buckeyes win the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship as they beat Notre Dame 34-23.

Smith recorded 87 catches, 1,243 receiving yards, and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore last season. He was also a unanimous All-American and was named First-Team All-Big Ten for the second year in a row.

Through just five games this year, Smith has 44 receptions for 823 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also averaging over 150 yards and roughly two touchdowns per game.

Again, the Texans are probably too good to land the first pick in the 2027 draft. But if they do, should they draft Jeremiah Smith?

The answer is yes. Houston already has one of the league’s best wide receivers in two-time Pro Bowler Nico Collins. The former Michigan Wolverine has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past three seasons, and is one of quarterback C.J. Stroud’s favorite targets.

Yet, it wouldn’t hurt to add another talented wideout to the mix like Jeremiah Smith.

Surely, the Texans aren’t thinking about the 2027 draft right now. They’re more focused on trying to get their first win of the season and become the first 0-4 team since the 1992 San Diego Chargers to make the playoffs. But Jeremiah Smith, who’s a generational talent like Rotman pointed out, would be an excellent pickup for Houston.
