Nick Saban has offered a blunt take on the chaos surrounding college football today.
In his view, athletic departments are pouring millions into their rosters, but when that spending doesn’t lead to wins, it’s often the head coach who ends up taking the blame.
Nick Saban Links NIL Spending to College Football’s Coaching Carousel
“The cause and effect of paying players is we’re raising money from alumni who now think they should have a say in what happens, and that’s why 33 coaches got fired last year.” Saban said on a recent episode of “This Past Weekend with Theo Von.”
According to Saban, the biggest challenge here is to figure out which players deserve to be paid and which positions should get the most investment.
He argued that if a program misjudges its talent and spends money on the wrong players, it could end up paying the price later.

Saban explained that teams can spend a huge amount of money without seeing the results they expect if they fail to evaluate players properly.
In his view, bad roster decisions can leave a team with a weaker squad despite all the money being spent. And that ultimately led to disappointing results and increased pressure on the coaching staff.
That was essentially the heart of Saban’s argument, though college football fans also had plenty of different opinions about it.
CFB Fans Split Over Nick Saban’s Comments
One fan labeled Saban’s stance on NIL as “hypocrisy” due to a glaring double standard between his public advocacy for roster regulations and his actual actions.
“Saban’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.”
Many fans argue that Saban spent his entire career at Alabama building a dynasty by exploiting the previous system, in which elite programs had a massive recruiting advantage.
Some also came to Saban’s support.
“He’s not wrong,” one X user noted.
Another fan noted, “Well, if they’re paying for the groceries, they should have a say in the Chef. Most likely, they’re paying a big portion of the coaches’ salary as well.”
According to many fans, if boosters are funding the entire operation, they expect control over who runs it.
“Tbf (to be fair), if people are dumping millions into a program and the team is coached like (expletive), obviously that’s the outcome???” a fan said.

As fans point out, booster clubs and alumni collectives are no longer just building stadiums or funding nice facilities. They are directly writing the multi-million-dollar checks that fund player rosters via NIL.
“$10 million per year salary for Coaches, yeah, they are paid to win, period. That’s how it works. The game has passed Saban by; it’s why he is in the booth,” one X user said.
College football is now a corporate, results-oriented business, and many believe Saban chose to walk away rather than adapt to it.
