Back to back weeks on ABC? Ok!
Mizzou and Texas A&M face off tomorrow morning for the third time in three straight seasons. There isn’t much of a rivalry between the two schools, despite being conference mates now for 30 years, they’ve only faced off a total of 18 times, and 14 of those came as conference games.
The previous four games were a set of games in the late 50s, and ten again in the early 90s. Texas A&M won all four of those games, which some might recognize the 1993 obliteration in College Station when Mizzou lost 73-0. 1993 was also Bob Stull’s last year, and Mizzou finished 3-7-1, beating Illinois to open the season, then losing the next two games 108-3. That season was low-key hilarious despite the losses. But let’s move on.
The Big 12 ramped up in 1996, and the two schools faced each other twice in 1998 and 1999, both A&M wins.
So Texas A&M won the first six matchups, and since then Missouri has won 7 games to the Aggies 5. The Tigers won in 2002 and 2003, lost in 2006 but won in 2007 (I was at that game!), in 2010 they won in College Station 30-9 on the day I got married.
But perhaps the most remembered game was in 2013, when Henry Josey scampered away from the Aggie defense, clinching the SEC East division championship for the Tigers. Texas A&M still had an outside shot at the SEC West Division coming into the day, they needed some other results to play out that didn’t play out. But losing made it not matter.
The two teams met again the next season and Missouri won. But since then the three games have all swung well into A&Ms favor. 41-10 two years ago, and 38-17 last year.
Coming into the season, I think a lot of people thought this would likely be a loss. But A&M’s lost some luster, leading to the Tigers being a home favorite. They’re still talented as hell though. Just win, baby.
