As Indiana State shook up the college football world with its 24-12 win over FCS's fifth-ranked team South Dakota State, Terre Haute South grad and Sycamore defensive back Nic Yatsko earned Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week honors for his role in Saturday's victory.
Along with Yatsko, ISU wide receiver and kick returner Rashad Rochelle received the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week honor, the conference announced Monday.
Rochelle picked up Indiana State’s second MVFC Offensive Player of the Week nod this season, while Yatsko becomes the third different Sycamore to earn Newcomer of the Week honors following the team’s win at SDSU. ISU improved to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the MVFC.
Rochelle sparked the Sycamores after returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put Indiana State up early in Brookings. He added four receptions for 84 yards with scores of 17 and 57 yards to propel the Sycamores to their first win over SDSU since 2011 and the Sycamores’ first top five win since 2012. His kickoff return for a score marked Indiana State’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2014 and the longest since the end of the 2006 season.
Yatsko continues to make his presence felt as the redshirt freshman nickel back came through with a career-high 14 tackles, 2.0 tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery at SDSU. Yatsko came through with a play that swung the momentum in the first quarter as SDSU was driving down the field following Rochelle’s kickoff return for a touchdown. On a SDSU fake punt, Yatsko came up with the forced fumble in Indiana State territory, and subsequently fell on the football for the recovery, one of Indiana State’s three turnovers in the game.
Indiana State plays host to MVFC foe Illinois State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
