Notre Dame vs Stanford: Irish Defense Aim To Get Back To Early Season Dominance
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Notre Dame defense when they traveled to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels. Thankfully, that game has been the outlier for Chris Ash's outstanding unit so far in 2026. This is still one of the best defenses in the country and I firmly believe they're going to use this opportunity against Stanford and their struggling offense to remind the college football world of that.
This has been a rivalry the Irish have dominated lately, winning six of the last seven games and it's looking like it will be more of the same tomorrow afternoon. In order for that to come to fruition, the Notre Dame defense is going to have to play fast, aggressive, assignment correct football. Here are the three biggest storylines, two crucial battles and one player to watch in tomorrow's matchup with the Stanford Cardinal.
THREE BIGGEST STORYLINES
The 'Get Right' Game
Last week was a shocking 'come back down to Earth' moment for the Notre Dame defense. North Carolina's offense has some good weapons on the perimeter, but quarterback Billy Edwards made some throws against this defense we haven't seen a quarterback make all season. This is the opportunity to right that ship against a struggling Cardinal offense. Stanford quarterback Davis Warren is a better overall signal caller than Edwards, but the weapons at Warren's disposal don't compare to what the Tar Heels brought to the table. This is a 'get right' game for the Fighting Irish defense.
Which Defensive Lineman Puts On A Show?
Over the years, we've seen multiple defensive lineman put on shows against the Stanford offense. Going all the way back to 2006, defensive end Victor Abiamiri totaled 3.0 sacks against the Cardinal. In 2018, defensive tackle Jerry Tillery set the program record for most sacks in a single game with 4.0 against Stanford. In 2023, defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste returned blocked field goal 60 yards for a touchdown and in 2024 defensive tackles Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills terrorized the Stanford offensive line. It's a pretty safe bet that a Notre Dame defensive lineman is going to have a big performance on Saturday. The question is, who will it be?
Don't Overlook Their Skilled Players
Does Stanford have any skilled players on the roster who will be taken in the first or second round of the ensuing NFL Draft? No, but they do have quality athletes on the perimeter and in the backfield that Notre Dame's defense will have to account for. Receivers Caden High, Nico Brown and Zion Robinson are good athletes. Running back Micah Ford is a quality back that can hurt you on the ground if you're not sound and playing assignment-correct football. This should be an area that Notre Dame thrives, but it's still worth noting nonetheless.
TWO CRUCIAL BATTLES
Boubacar Traore vs Kahlil House
Fighting Irish defensive end Boubacar Traore is looking every bit the player we thought he would be this season. This weekend, he'll have the opportunity to go against Stanford's most inconsistent offensive tackle. Right tackle Kahlil House has given up the most pressures and most sacks on the Stanford offensive line while Traore currently leads the Irish in total pressures. If Traore wins this matchup, and he should, it will be a long day at the office for Warren. The 6-5. 253-pound defensive end has had a really, really good season up to this point. But Saturday, the experienced edge rusher could put on an eye-popping performance.
DJ McKinney vs Outside Receivers
It's unclear how much, if at all, we'll see star cornerback Leonard Moore. Head coach Marcus Freeman said during his Monday press conference that if Moore can't go, it'll be sophomore Jayden Sanders and 5th-year senior DJ McKinney at corner. McKinney has put together a really good season up to this point, but he's performances haven't been highlighted too much considering he's starting opposite of the best defensive back in all of college football. Having said that, McKinney will have the opportunity to make plays against the perimeter receivers from Stanford. He made Wisconsin pay with a pick-six in the season opener and another could be in store this weekend.
ONE PLAYER TO WATCH: CB JAYDEN SANDERS
If Moore isn't able to go tomorrow afternoon, Freeman has already given the nod to Sanders, a former Michigan transfer. We've seen Sanders play boundary corner during the spring when Moore sat out during the Blue-Gold game. He got beat early, but put together a strong performance the remainder of the scrimmage. Sanders is a more than capable player in the boundary, but he is coming off of a rough performance against North Carolina. That isn't something I would read too much into, but having said that, it won't be a mystery who Stanford will target on offense early and often. Sanders will have multiple opportunities to make plays on the football.
