Three players, two matchups, and one prediction for Virginia football vs. Syracuse

The vibes couldn’t have been higher for Virginia football after its first two games. The ’Hoos dominated NC State in a season-opening statement and took care of business against an overmatched Norfolk State squad. Virginia was ranked, confident, and primed to make another run at the ACC Championship game.

Then the ’Hoos went to Charlotte. Then they went to Tallahassee. And just three short weeks later, the sky is officially falling in Hooville.

After getting waxed, 38-7, by Florida State last weekend, Virginia (3-2, 1-1 ACC) returns home looking to steady the ship against a Syracuse Orange (2-2, 0-2 ACC) squad that, on paper, wouldn’t have struck fear into the ’Hoos before the season began. But the season has very much begun, and you never know what you’ll get from a team in freefall.

Was last weekend’s butt-whooping a wake-up call or the beginning of an unexpectedly long season? Saturday will go a long way in answering that question. So, to get you set for a hinge point in Virginia’s season, here are three Syracuse players to know, two matchups to watch, and one prediction for Saturday’s matchup.

Three Orange to know

QB Amari Odom (or Steve Angeli)

Starting quarterback Steve Angeli was benched after throwing just one touchdown and five interceptions in two Orange losses to California and Pittsburgh, opening the door for Kennesaw State transfer Amari Odom to take the reins. Syracuse named Odom the starter just before kickoff against UConn last Saturday, and the senior from Inglewood, California, quickly proved he was the right call. Odom completed 73% of his passes for 335 yards and five touchdowns, and he added another score on the ground as the Orange escaped a shootout with a 42-41 overtime win over the rival Huskies.

After a performance of that caliber, Odom seems to have the QB1 job for now, but the injury report is muddying the waters. Odom was last listed as questionable on Thursday with arm/shoulder soreness, which could give Angeli another shot.

The injury makes Saturday a difficult scout for Virginia, as Odom offers much more dual-threat capability — 347 rushing yards and seven TDs last season at Kennesaw State — compared to Angeli, who has -20 career rushing yards.

WR Umari Hatcher

A Woodbridge, Virginia, native, wide receiver Umari Hatcher is the clear-cut top receiving option for the Orange. With 29 receptions for 434 yards and five touchdowns through four games, Hatcher has more receiving yards than the next three top Syracuse pass-catchers combined.

After pulling in 12 catches for 153 yards and three scores against UConn last week, Hatcher has earned his way onto the Biletnikoff Award Watch List and should be at the top of Virginia’s defensive scouting report.

LB Keyshawn Johnson

UT Martin transfer linebacker Keyshawn Johnson has made an immediate impact against higher-level competition. Though slightly undersized at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Johnson leads the Orange with 3.5 sacks and already has a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup on his 2026 stat sheet.

Johnson has a clearly defined role in the Orange defense: get after the quarterback. And after allowing 10 sacks against the Seminoles last weekend, Johnson needs to be circled and highlighted on the Virginia scouting report.

Two matchups to watch

Virginia’s offensive line vs. the Syracuse pass rush

Aside from Keyshawn Johnson, Syracuse’s pass rush isn’t particularly scary, and frankly, it would be discouraging to see the Orange generate any consistent pressure on Beau Pribula this Saturday.

Virginia’s offensive line, lauded before the season for its age and experience, didn’t show up against Florida State, allowing 10 sacks and pressure in the backfield on nearly every play. The ’Hoos need, and should get, a major bounce-back effort inside Scott Stadium against the Orange.

The Syracuse rushing attack vs. Virginia’s defense

The ’Hoos were gashed for 281 rushing yards by the Seminoles last weekend, highlighted by a 136-yard, five-touchdown rushing effort by quarterback Ashton Daniels. Virginia put one of the worst tackling displays you’ll ever see on tape as the Seminoles ripped off explosive run after explosive run.

Now, Virginia will welcome a Syracuse offense that ranks sixth in the ACC with 166.3 rushing yards per game heading into the weekend. The ’Hoos could catch a break if Odom can’t suit up, as we’ve seen what can happen to the defense against a mobile quarterback, but regardless of who’s under center, Virginia needs to be more disciplined against the Orange.

One prediction

Are the ’Hoos who we thought they were through two games? Evidently not. But I’m not willing to accept just yet that Virginia has completely forgotten how to play football. Syracuse was projected to finish 12th in the ACC Preseason Poll, and after losses to Pittsburgh and California, the Orange has done little to discredit that ranking.

Virginia fans are yearning for a glimpse of the dominant rushing attack that flashed in the season opener against NC State. At home against a Syracuse defense that just gave up 41 points to UConn is as favorable a spot as any to reignite the ground game.

As long as the ’Hoos aren’t the victim of an Amari Odom-led Syracuse magic carpet ride, I think Virginia, which is nearly a touchdown favorite, gets back on track. I’m ready to get hurt again, so give me the ’Hoos by 10.

Score prediction: Virginia 28, Syracuse 18
