Underwhelming, concerning, pedestrian — that’s how many may view the start to Indiana‘s season. At a perfect 5-0 with four 30-point blowouts, the Hoosiers sure couldn’t be asking for a better start to the season, especially compared to historical norms.
Insert the Paul Rudd meme… Look at us! Who would have thought?
But the optics of the Northwestern close call at home — a game that’s aging better and better by the day as the Wildcats are 3-1 with resounding wins over everyone except the 29-23 close call with IU — have crept into the public perception of the defending national champions.
Indiana has dealt with injuries, namely to CB A.J. Harris (who hasn’t played since Week 1), but most players returned to last week’s 47-15 win over Rutgers.
DE Stephen Daley remains eligible, as does Kellan Wyatt, for at least another week.
There’s championship experience on this defense, as nine starters return from last year’s roster. So long as Daley and Wyatt remain eligible and the rest of the cast stays healthy, this is the most seasoned defense in the country.
Josh Hoover has yet to throw his first interception despite a propensity to do so at TCU, and boasts a 15:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio (10.3 yards per attempt).
Turbo Richard has been excellent and returned in a big way against Rutgers, gaining over 200 yards. When he left the Northwestern game early, Lee Beebe Jr. rushed for 200 himself. Pick your fighter in the backfield — the Indiana run game is excellent.
This team is still absolutely a championship contender despite not being priced like it.
To harken back to a mid-August appraisal I had of Nebraska:
“A five-game lineup of Ohio, Bowling Green, North Dakota, Michigan State, and Maryland could have Nebraska off to a 5-0 start. But the schedule shapes up with Indiana, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Rutgers, Ohio State, and Iowa — the Huskers may only be favored once after Oct. 3. That puts this team at a razor-thin margin to make a bowl game.”
So here we are, five games into the season and Nebraska is 5-0.
The difference here is that Nebraska is likely favored three more times — Washington, at Illinois and at Rutgers are all way less daunting than the summer suggested — so the Huskers probably aren’t on their way to 5-7.
But it’s hard to ignore how fast Nebraska has risen up the power ratings, now sitting at PK with Texas A&M and Missouri and two points better than Ole Miss, per consensus power ratings.
Hogwash. There is not a team more significantly overvalued by power ratings than Nebraska.
Though older and more experienced, we’ve seen this act from QB Anthony Colandrea.
In 2024, he was fun and excellent for Virginia until opposing defenses got better, resulting in 11 interceptions and a 2:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio in November. Colandrea and Nebraska took care of business against teams they should have, and there’s credit to be given for that.
But against the top teams in the Big Ten, let’s be serious here. Nebraska doesn’t have the line play on either side of the ball to keep up with the Ohio States, Iowas, and (pertinent to this week)… Indiana’s.
Keep your eye on the weather Saturday as Lincoln, Neb., is expected to see some pretty gusty conditions.
Sustained winds in excess of 15 mph are expected throughout the day, with gusts touching 30 mph. The total was initially bet up from 48.5 at open to 52.5 before forecasts became more certain and heavy action came in on the under, pulling it back down to 48.5.
Nebraska took a slight move from +8.5 to +7.5.
Even on the wrong side of -7, I’m in on Indiana this week. This team is far superior to Nebraska and is one of the top contenders for the national championship again. Replace Indiana with a like-rated team such as Miami, Georgia, or Notre Dame, and are those teams laying -7.5?
If so, then Nebraska’s power rating has ballooned far out of control. And if not, then Indiana is an excellent play.
Despite mountains of evidence, Indiana still manages to come at a discount.
Pick: Indiana -7.5 (Play to -9.5)
