Hoosiers Rally for 20-17 Road Victory
The No. 7 Indiana Hoosiers survived a major test Saturday afternoon, rallying to defeat Nebraska 20-17 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. After trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter, Indiana delivered two explosive touchdown passes to complete the comeback and preserve its undefeated season.
Head coach Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play, extending their winning streak to 22 games. Nebraska, coached by Matt Rhule, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The matchup featured two unbeaten teams entering the afternoon, but Indiana’s late-game execution ultimately made the difference in a hard-fought contest.
Nebraska Controls the First Half
Nebraska came out aggressively, using quarterback Anthony Colandrea’s passing ability and mobility to put pressure on the Indiana defense. The Cornhuskers opened the scoring with a field goal before Indiana answered with a 42-yard kick from Nico Radicic to tie the game at 3-3.
Nebraska regained control when wide receiver Nyziah Hunter took a reverse handoff and raced 10 yards into the end zone, giving the Cornhuskers a 10-3 advantage.
Indiana struggled to establish its usually productive running game. The Hoosiers’ leading rushers, Lee Beebe Jr. and Turbo Richard, found little room against Nebraska’s defense, forcing the visitors to rely more heavily on quarterback Josh Hoover.
The Cornhuskers carried a 10-3 lead into halftime after Indiana’s offense struggled to turn promising possessions into touchdowns. Nebraska had an opportunity to extend its advantage before the break, but a missed field goal kept the Hoosiers within striking distance.
Hoover and Marsh Ignite the Comeback
Indiana opened the second half with another field goal, cutting Nebraska’s lead to 10-6. However, the Cornhuskers continued to move the ball effectively, and Colandrea delivered a spectacular 39-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to push Nebraska ahead 17-6.
With Indiana facing a double-digit deficit, Hoover and wide receiver Nick Marsh took over.
On the first play of Indiana’s next possession, Hoover found Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown reception. Marsh broke away from the Nebraska defense, giving the Hoosiers an immediate spark and cutting the deficit to 17-13.
Indiana’s defense then forced Nebraska to surrender possession, giving Hoover another opportunity to put his team in front.
That drive produced the game’s defining moment. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Nebraska 44-yard line, Indiana lined up in a formation that appeared designed for a short rushing attempt. Nebraska crowded the line of scrimmage, anticipating a run.
Instead, Hoover delivered a pass to a wide open Marsh, who caught the ball and raced 44 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Indiana suddenly led 20-17 with just over seven minutes remaining.
Marsh finished with six catches for 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Hoover completed 12 of 22 passes for 263 yards and two scores without throwing an interception.
Indiana Defense Seals the Victory
Nebraska had opportunities to respond, but Indiana’s defense made crucial stops in the closing minutes. The Cornhuskers failed to convert a fourth-down attempt, and a late sack by defensive lineman Tobi Osunsanmi disrupted another potential scoring drive.
Indiana struggled to run out the clock and gave Nebraska one final opportunity. However, the Hoosiers held on as the Cornhuskers ran out of time to complete their own comeback.
A Major Win for Cignetti
The victory showcased Indiana’s resilience. The Hoosiers were far from their most dominant, finishing with just 65 rushing yards and 328 total yards, but their ability to deliver in crucial moments proved decisive.
For Cignetti, the comeback represents another important achievement as Indiana continues defending its national championship. The Hoosiers now turn their attention to a massive home matchup against Ohio State.
Nebraska will look to regroup before facing Oregon, while Indiana leaves Lincoln undefeated after a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback.
