Army took down Tulane on a game-winning 25-yard field goal from Dawson Jones. But that is not the story of the game.
Quarterback Cale Hellum ran the length of two football fields by himself in Saturday’s win over Tulane. He finished the game with 223 rushing yards on 38 carries and two touchdowns. Through the air, he was only three of six for 19 yards, but the game plan was simple: run and do not let anything stop you.
An interception in the first quarter by quarterback Kadin Semonza in Army territory led to points and an early 7-0 lead for the Black Knights. Tulane remained scoreless through the rest of the first quarter.
Tulane finally gained a 10-7 lead in the third quarter after an 11-play 68yard touchdown drive, which was their first of the game.
Army kept up the whole way through the game. Neither team held a lead by more than a possession.
With 3:55 remaining and the game tied, Tulane decided to go for it on fourth down on Army’s 33-yard line. A turnover on downs set up the 12-play, 58-yard game-winning drive.
Army improved to 3-2 on the season and earned a big-time conference win in the AAC.
