Rudy Kessinger's 48-yard field goal with 1:50 to play lifted Eastern Michigan to a 25-23 Mid-American Conference win over the Akron Zips on Saturday, Oct. 10, at InfoCision Stadium.
The Zips (1-5, 0-2) still had a chance to win their Homecoming game, and drove 46 yards to the Eagles 29-yard-line in nine plays, but Matthew Schramm missed a 47-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining.
The loss spoiled outstanding performances by Akron running back Jordan Gant and quarterback Brayden Roggow. Gant ran for 117 yards on 22 carries and Roggow completed 17 of 24 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
Roggow's third TD pass was a 27-yard strike to Marquese Williams to cap a nine-play, 92-yard drive and gave the Zips a 23-22 lead with 6:27 to play. After a two-point conversion try failed, the Eagles (4-3, 3-0) answered with a 42-yard drive to set up Kessinger's game-winning kick.
Marcel Williams led the Zips with five catches for 89 yards and TDs of 15 and 40 yards, both in the first half to put UA in front 14-13 at halftime.
Donelius Johnson and Mehki Flowers stood out for the Zips on defense. Johnson had a game-high 16 tackles, including nine solo, and Flowers stuffed the stat sheet with 15 tackles, nine solo, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
Akron travels to Miami (3-3, 1-1) next Saturday, Oct. 17.
