A Pennsylvania mass shooting in Erie left nine people dead, including two children and a pregnant woman, as police investigate the motive.
A mass shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, left eight people dead on Friday, including a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a woman who was eight months pregnant. The suspected gunman, a 45-year-old man, also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing the reported death toll to nine, police said.
Seven of the victims were related to the suspected gunman, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman, according to authorities. Investigators have not established a motive for the shooting.
The victims included a one-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy and the pregnant woman. The deaths brought the total toll to nine, counting the suspected shooter.
According to Deutsche Welle, which published an account based on reporting from the Associated Press and dpa, Lorah described the aftermath as an exceptionally difficult scene for responding officers.
“Some scenes stay with you long after you leave them. This is one of those tragic scenes,” the police chief said.
Investigators have not established a motive. Police are working to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting, while officials have urged caution against speculation as they continue gathering evidence.
The investigation has also drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding two women who were found dead outside the residence. The Associated Press reported that video and audio evidence suggested the women arrived at the home in distress and appeared to be seeking help before they were shot. Authorities are examining the available evidence to better understand what happened.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from local and state leaders. Erie Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the victims’ relatives directly, acknowledging that public statements could not ease their loss.
“What happened to you was horrific, and there is nothing that any of us can say today that will make this any easier,” Devlin said. She added that the community was grieving alongside the family and would support them.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he had spoken with Devlin and offered his administration’s assistance.
“My heart breaks for this family,” Shapiro wrote, adding that he and his wife, Lori, were praying for the victims’ loved ones and the wider Erie community.
As investigators continue their work, the identities of the victims and the motive remain central unanswered questions. Officials have not announced a definitive explanation for the violence.
