Simsbury’s first-year football coach Jim Caouette had faith in his system and also in the 22 seniors that were ready to play for him this season after the Trojans won only one game last year.

But even he was a little surprised that the Trojans are 4-1 at this point in the season after a 16-0 victory over Farmington last Friday.

“If you told me we’d be 4-1 at this point of the season, I would have told you you’re crazy,” Caouette said. “But to do what we’ve done and the way we’ve gotten here is awesome.

“It’s not too much of a surprise because of the senior class and the talent they have. Their leadership has been awesome and it’s trickled down into the underclassmen.”

Simsbury won four games in the last three years before this season. The Trojans went 1-9 last year, 2-8 the year before and 1-9 the season before that.

Simsbury’s only loss came to Middletown (4-0) in the season opener, 40-36. The Trojans are currently in sixth place in the Class L tournament rankings. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Senior quarterback Braeden Siano, who had two touchdown passes against Farmington, is a two-year starter. On defense, senior linebacker Kayveon Long has been a leader, with 67 tackles in five games, and he and Jesse Carst sacked Farmington quarterback Mason Kiniry in the end zone for a safety Friday night. Long also had an interception.

“We couldn’t be happier,” said Caouette, who was the defensive coordinator at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury for nine years before coming to Simsbury. “As much as I’d like to take credit, it’s really about these kids. I have a great group of seniors.

“They’ve completely bought in to what we’re trying to do from an offensive and defensive perspective and on special teams. They practice hard. They do everything we ask them to do.”

Simsbury, which is second in the CCC Tier 3 standings behind Middletown, has a bye week and will play again Oct. 23 at Bristol Eastern.

Some highlights: Southington quarterback Jacoby Roman completed 13 of 18 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the Blue Knights’ 29-6 win over Manchester Friday. … Tim Hickman ran for one touchdown and threw for another to lead the Cougars (3-1) to a 23-14 win over Morgan/Old Saybrook/Westbrook Friday. Hickman scored on a 25-yard run and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Even Garcia. … Rockville quarterback Luca Houle had three touchdown passes – including 64- and 34-yard passes to Keith Schmidt but Rockville lost to undefeated North Branford 38-27 Friday night.

This upcoming weekend is a bye week for many teams so the schedule is a little sparse but here are a few games to watch:

Plainville (4-0) at Rocky Hill (2-2), Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Plainville is led by senior quarterback Anthony Abarno, whose 1,201 passing yards is ranked second in the state (he also has completed 71 of 100 passing attempts) and the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 158-33.

Wethersfield (2-2) at Middletown (4-0), Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Middletown is on a roll, giving up only two touchdowns in its last three games, while Wethersfield rebounded from losing its first two games by winning its last two against Northwest Catholic and E.O. Smith.
