After a badly needed bye week, Rutgers football will be trying to get a badly needed win.
Greg Schiano’s team, which has lost four of its first five games, will travel to play Maryland on Oct. 17 at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland, the first of two straight road games the Scarlet Knights will play.
Rutgers last played Oct. 3, falling to defending champion Indiana 47-15 at home. The Terrapins are coming off a 45-16 loss to Ohio State and have played poorly this season, previously losing to Nebraska 48-23 and UCLA 54-3 in a blowout loss the week before that.
This is a winnable game for Rutgers – of course Maryland is saying the same thing on its side. Coach Mike Locksley said as much following his team’s loss to the Buckeyes, saying “it’s a very winnable game for us at home for Homecoming.”
The Scarlet Knights will try to prove him wrong.

Rutgers vs. Maryland prediction
This game is not exactly featuring the Big Ten's finest. Both teams have struggled badly. Both teams are facing potential changes in the offseason. Both teams badly need a victory. That's where Rutgers has an advantage, because Greg Schiano's teams typically play well coming out of a bye week (13-8 in such instances under Schiano). The Scarlet Knights have also played well at Maryland in recent seasons (it's where they clinched bowl eligibility in 2024). Both these defenses are among the worst in the Big Ten, but Rutgers' offense is slightly better. If the Scarlet Knights can get a strong showing from running back Antwan Raymond and get the ball into the hands of WR KJ Duff, they're going to have another advantage. Dylan Lonergan (or AJ Surace if Lonergan isn't healthy enough to play) must avoid turning the ball over, too. Look for Rutgers to pull out a close win. It won't be pretty, but it's a victory nonetheless.
Score prediction: Rutgers 24, Maryland 20
