Florida State Dismisses Top 2026 Recruit Amid Program Turmoil

Florida State has fired freshman cornerback Chuck Kennon, the highest-rated recruit in its 2026 class, just days before a tough road game. A university spokesman confirmed Tuesday that the dismissal happened because of “conduct detrimental to the team.” This move adds to the growing noise around head coach Mike Norvell as his team sits at 3-3 on the season.
The loss of Kennon hurts a defense that already struggles on the road. He was a four-star prospect who could have been a key piece for years to come. Now he is gone, and the program faces more questions about its future direction. Fans are watching closely as the team prepares to face Miami this Saturday.
A Top Prospect Gone Too Soon
Chuck Kennon was supposed to be the anchor of Florida State’s future secondary. According to reports, Kennon was dismissed for conduct considered detrimental to the team. The report stated, according to Yahoo Sports, “The highest-rated recruit from Florida State’s 2026 signing class, cornerback Chuck Kennon, is no longer with the Seminoles’ program.”
Kennon was a big name coming out of Booker High School in Sarasota. Rivals placed him as the No. 70 overall prospect within the 2026 class. He also ran the 100-meter dash in 11.08 seconds, showing elite speed that every team wants. In July 2025, the Seminoles secured his commitment despite competition from Georgia, Florida, Miami, and LSU.
He committed to Florida State in July 2025 and signed in December. Even as fans worried about Norvell’s job, Kennon stayed loyal. He said, “I’m a Seminole fan at the end of the day. I love Florida State. No matter the coaching staff, I feel like I’d still be where I’m at.”
That loyalty did not save his spot on the team. Kennon does not appear on the official roster as of Tuesday afternoon. The school offered no further details on what specific actions led to the firing.
Coaching Staff Under Fire
The dismissal comes while Mike Norvell fights to keep his job. The school faces more than $430 million in debt, and the athletic department fired Mike Alford on Sept. 14. Norvell has a 41-37 record over seven seasons, but his recent numbers are ugly. He holds a 10-20 record since winning the ACC title three years ago.
Even with a buyout that could cost the school nearly $51 million, the pressure is high. The team lost 44-20 to Louisville last Friday. They could have gone up 17-0 but turned the ball over on fourth-and-goal. They then allowed 35 straight points.
Norvell took the blame for the loss after the game. “Too many times, we didn’t show the detail, the discipline, the mental toughness that’s necessary on the road. And it starts with me,” Norvell said, according to Yahoo Sports. This loss extended a road losing streak that dates back to 2023.
Defensive coordinator Tony White and cornerbacks coach Blue Adams had high hopes for Kennon. Norvell’s words now feel like a missed opportunity.
Kennon played only one snap for Florida State this season. The incident occurred during a 38-7 victory against Virginia on Oct. 3. He did not dress for games early in the season. So his removal does not change the game plan for Saturday against Miami.
However, the defense still has major issues. White’s unit recorded 10 sacks against Virginia, the most since 1997. But they also allowed 397 rushing yards to the Cardinals. Isaac Brown ran for 235 yards on just 17 carries.
Florida State is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. They have not won a regular-season road game since beating Florida on Nov. 25, 2023. Now they travel to face unbeaten Miami, a team Kennon turned down to stay in Tallahassee.
The timing is bad. The Seminoles need stability, not more drama. Losing a top recruit for conduct issues sends a message that the program is in trouble. It also hurts the long-term outlook for a defense that needs young talent.
For fans, this is another sign that things are not working. The team has a 4-15 conference record since their perfect league play in 2023. They missed the College Football Playoff that year and have not come close since. Now they face a tough test in Miami with a depleted roster and a coach on the hot seat.
Final Thoughts on the Situation
The firing of Chuck Kennon is a clear signal that Florida State is struggling to manage its culture. When a top recruit leaves for conduct reasons, it suggests deeper issues within the program. The school confirmed the dismissal for “conduct detrimental to the team,” but they did not say what that conduct was.
This story will likely grow as the season goes on.
