The 11-1 Ole Miss Rebels are likely gearing up for their first College Football Playoff appearance in program history. Their only regular-season loss came against the Georgia Bulldogs.
However, Lane Kiffin, who had been the team’s head coach since 2020, will not be leading the charge. On Sunday, just two days after his team defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl, Kiffin announced he is taking the head coaching position with the LSU Tigers.
In that same announcement, he revealed Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter blocked Kiffin’s request to coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff. It has turned into an ugly split between Kiffin and the program.
It has also been a quick transition. On Sunday, the same day Kiffin accepted the LSU job, CBS Sports’ John Talty posted a video of the head coach boarding a plane in Oxford, Mississippi, bound for Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Kiffin received a hostile send-off, as Ole Miss fans can be heard yelling and booing their former head coach as he leaves.

He ends his tenure with the Rebels with a 55-19 record, 3-2 in bowl games. According to On3’s Chris Low, Kiffin is expected to be introduced as LSU’s next head coach during a press conference Monday.
As for Ole Miss, defensive coordinator Pete Golding has been promoted to serve as the team’s permanent head coach, giving the Rebels a quick replacement. However, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, several staff members are following Kiffin to the Tigers, including general manager Billy Glasscock and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.
While this move has caused emotions to run high, each program looks to move on. For Ole Miss, that likely means preparing for the College Football Playoff and trying to win the program’s first national championship.
