Dan Lanning Named Candidate at Penn State, but Plenty Would Have to Happen

Oregon is undoubtedly having one of the most disappointing years in college football, and you can make a strong argument that it's the most disappointing team in the country by a wide margin.
It's almost tough to get a feel for what this program is at the moment, as Oregon really hasn't been able to do enough on either side of the football. It's going to be interesting to see how this leads to some changes over the next couple of years, though it still doesn't feel like Dan Lanning or anybody else is on the hot seat.
There's an argument that if Lanning's team keeps struggling over the next couple of weeks, he could eventually find himself on the hot seat, but he's still 3-2 and has a chance to make the College Football Playoff.
A lot of it will come down to beating Northwestern and Ohio State, as the Ducks would still have a chance to make the College Football Playoff.
I don't want to say that making the College Football Playoff would change everything, as that's ultimately not the goal for this program – winning national titles is.
However, there's something to be said about at least getting there.
As for others, a writer believes that if Penn State continues to struggle and Lanning gets fired, he could eventually end up with the Nittany Lions.
“Dan Lanning's future with the Oregon Ducks is far from secure, with fans routinely calling for his job. At some point, the Ducks might bend under the pressure.
If Lanning is removed before the end of the season, he might want to get as far from Oregon as possible. Penn State's location on the other side of the country could be a logical choice. “Lanning's run of four straight seasons with double-digit wins would give the Nittany Lions plenty of reason to consider him a top outside candidate,” Ian Van Roy wrote.
It wouldn't be crazy to say that Lanning would be a great piece for Penn State if it ever decided to go in a different direction. At the same time, Oregon doesn't seem likely to move on from Lanning anytime soon, and the same goes for Matt Campbell at Penn State.
For that reason, and more, this conversation likely won't happen anytime soon. Still, it's interesting to think about what an Oregon team would look like without Lanning.
