After its third straight win over the weekend, Memphis returns to action on Friday with a road game against Tulane. The Green Wave enter the game following a loss against Army, and they sit at 2-3 on the year.
Like the Tigers, Tulane hired a new head coach during the offseason after Jon Sumrall left for an SEC job. Sumrall was hired by Florida and has led the Gators to a 4-2 record, tying the win total from last year just six games into the season.
After losing their head coach, the Green Wave elected to promote and hire Will Hall after he spent last year as the pass game coordinator. Like Charles Huff, Hall spent time at Southern Miss, and Huff replaced his as the head coach in Hattiesburg after Hall went 1-6 in 2024.
Tulane is averaging 18.4 points per game, but it’s averaging 26 points at home this season. Offense has been an issue this season, and the quarterback position has been up in the air for most of the season.
Ahead of the week one matchup against Duke, the Green Wave announced Houston transfer Zeon Chriss-Gremillion would be the starting quarterback, but he was replaced after throwing for only 64 yards in the first half. Kadin Semonza replaced him and finished the game with 140 yards.
Semonza has started every game since then, and he has thrown for 804 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, but he has recorded -57 yards on the ground. While Semonza has been the starter, there is some uncertainty around the quarterback position, and all three quarterbacks are listed with an “OR” next to their names on the weekly depth chart.
There is some thought that true freshman Trace Johnson could get the start against the Tigers.
Junior Destyn Hill leads the team in receiving with 223 yards and a touchdown on 17 receptions, and no receiver has more than one receiving touchdowns.
On the ground, three running backs have ran for 200 or more yards, and senior running back Maurice Turner leads the team with 277 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Defensively, linebacker Dickson Agu leads the team with 46 tackles, while safety Kevin Adams III has added 45. The defense has struggled creating turnovers, and they’ve forced one fumble and haven’t recorded an interception.
It will be the first game the Tigers have played this season not on a Saturday, and it will be shown on ESPN.
