Florida State head coach Mike Norvell’s uncertain future was the topic when FOX Sports college football analyst RJ Young joined host Bomani Jones on “The Right Time with Bomani Jones.”
However, things escalated when Young knocked on the Seminoles’ unbeaten 2013 national championship team, which fans soon took issue with.
Fans Slam RJ Young’s ‘Worst Team’ Verdict on 2013 Florida State
On the podcast, Jones wondered why nobody, including Norvell, had been fired after FSU’s 3-3 start to the 2026 college football season.
“Because in the last couple of years, by now, dudes would start getting fired. Nobody’s been fired at Florida State,” Jones said. “I mean, the answer seems to be obvious. They ain’t got the money.”
Young responded by saying that it has been “way less fun than I thought it would be” watching Norvell survive at FSU, before making a controversial assessment of one of the most successful squads in college football history.
“We got to have a different discussion about 2013 Florida State. I think that’s one of the worst teams to win a national championship. That’s me,” Young said.

One Florida State fan had heard enough. “The comment about the 2013 team is the (expletive) rage bait comment I’ve ever seen on Twitter and I’ve been on Twitter a very long time,” they wrote.
Jones was also taken by surprise by the remark and followed up with a question after Young made light of the 2013 FSU team’s accomplishment. “Really? Despite all the talent and despite the results?”
When Jones further pressed if Young made that statement because of his possible dislike of Fisher, the analyst appeared to agree.
“Is it just because of Jimbo?” to which Young answered, “Some of it.”
Another fan noticed that it may be something personal rather than an actual football opinion for Young to make that statement. The fan wrote that “you gotta have some real serious hate in ya heart to call 2013 FSU da worst team to win a natty.”
Another Florida State wrote that it “is an insane quote but he’s had a lot of terrible takes in the past that he was proven wrong on too.”
Fisher’s 2013 champions had beaten Auburn 34-31 in the final BCS National Championship Game. They had also gone 14-0 under Fisher and had Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston at quarterback, who currently plays for the New York Giants.
With this context, one fan wrote, “Lunacy. The 2013 FSU team had all 22 starters play in the NFL. It included a Heisman Trophy winner at QB. Set the NCAA scoring record. Demolished everyone.”
A Seminoles fan took it a step further. “2013 FSU that had every starter get drafted? Highest point differential ever? That 2013 FSU? Either a FSU hater or click bait that I fell for.”
Florida State does still hold the FBS record for average margin of victory in a season, 39.5 points per game, but not every starter was drafted, though, as Josue Matias, Kenny Shaw, Christian Jones, and Terrance Smith all went undrafted.

The scoring record has also since fallen. Florida State’s 723 points were the FBS season record until 2019, when LSU scored 726, needing 15 games to the Seminoles’ 14.
One more fan had a question for Young. “Man said that the 2013 FSU team was one of the worst to win a natty… does he not remember more than half of those games were over at halftime?”
Whatever the verdict on 2013, the current Seminoles are 3-3 after a 44-20 loss at Louisville on Friday and will visit Miami on Saturday. They are ranked 59th nationally in PFN’s CFB Offense Impact Score, with a grade of 77.5 through six weeks.
Norvell, whose contract runs through 2031, would be owed roughly $46.5 million if he were fired on December 1, though that amount would shrink if he took another job.
