Kansas State Wildcats tight end Linkon Cure is one of the most hyped players in school history.
Perhaps, now is the time the Wildcats finally utilize him to the fullest. The start to his career has been slow, but coach Collin Klein thinks they will find a way to get Cure more touches the rest of the season.
The first chance comes Saturday against the rival Kansas Jayhawks in the Sunflower Showdown at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Here's what Klein had to say about Cure during his weekly press conference.
"It's been a matter of time," Klein said earlier this week. "There's two other plays where the ball has to go to him. So, I'm not surprised. I'm excited for the future and everything that he's doing. A matter of time."
There is a reason there is so much hype surrounding Cure, who is in the middle of his sophomore season. He arrived on campus last season with so many expectations. For one, he is the first five-star recruit in program history.
Cure had a star-studded career at Goodland (Kan.) High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. After dominating the football field, he was a standout for a strong basketball team and later won the state hurdles competition in track and field.
At 6-foot-5 and 242 pounds, he possesses all the athleticism needed to stand out at his position. That's why he was recruited by so many major colleges, including the Texas A & M Aggies, Oregon Ducks and many others.
The Cure train got off to a slow start last year. He finished with just six catches for 37 yards and no touchdowns. This season, things are still moving at a pedestrian pace. Cure has just five catches for 50 yards and yet to get into the end zone.
It's not all his fault.
The Wildcats are loaded at tight end, led by NFL prospect Garrett Oakley. They also had Will Anciaux, who was in the rotation before being ruled out for the season after sustaining a lower leg injury in the loss on the road against the Cincinnati Bearcats last week.
That appeared to open a window for Cure, who caught two passes for 27 yards in the loss to the Houston Cougars. This is huge for the Wildcats offense, which is looking for as many weapons as possible.
It's even important when considering the running game has struggled in the past two weeks. If Cure can become a big-play target, it would open things up for quarterback Avery Johnson and running backs Rodney Fields and Joe Jackson.
It seems Klein is ready to unleash Cure. Let's see what happens Saturday against the Jayhawks.
