Nebraska vs Oregon Prediction: Can the Ducks Turn This Around?

This is it. This is the season for an Oregon team that should be in full rock-and-roll mode at this point, but instead it’s been one big, sad trombone of a season.

The Ducks are still 3-2 with a not-that-horrible schedule the rest of the way outside of a trip to Ohio State. They lost to UCLA, but they can stay alive in the Big Ten title hunt with one more loss, even if an at-large CFP bid is likely gone with a third defeat and no Big Ten Championship.

And they have to do it with Nebraska’s former star quarterback, Dylan Raiola – maybe.

Nebraska had Indiana cooked, but it turned the stove off too early. The Hoosiers rallied back for a 20-17 win, but that might have been more about the defending national champs not being as good this year than the Huskers being close to fantastic.

However, winning in Eugene is still hard, and if Nebraska can do it, it’s 6-1 with a favorable schedule – Ohio State comes to Lincoln – and all of a sudden, it’s on the fast track to 10-2 – at least – and a possible at-large CFP bid.

Nebraska vs Oregon: Quick Hits

  • Oregon ends a good run of home games and goes to Illinois after this. After that, it hosts Northwestern before going to Ohio State.
  • Nebraska starts a run of three road games in four dates, getting a week off before playing Washington, and then it’s off to Illinois.
  • The two have never played as Big Ten teams. Oregon won the last meeting 42-35 in 2017. The Huskers are 6-2 overall in the series, with the first win in 1952.

Why Nebraska Will Win

UCLA beat up, battered, and bruised Oregon last week. The Ducks might have knocked out Bruin quarterback Nico Iamaleava with a knee injury, but they were destroyed offensively with seven turnovers and just 272 yards of total offense.

Oregon is a mess. Star quarterback Dante Moore is expected to miss another game after suffering a concussion against USC.

Dylan Raiola might get his shot against his former team, but he was beyond awful against UCLA. Brock Thomas doesn’t have Raiola’s talent, but he got the offense moving in the second half.

Nebraska gave up two huge touchdowns against Indiana, but held firm the rest of the way. Oregon’s offensive problems won’t all of a sudden be fixed this week.

Why Oregon Will Win

Lost in all of Oregon’s misery is a defense that showed up and tried to save the day against UCLA. It’s been the only team able to stuff the Bruin running game, and it should do the same against Nebraska, starting by keeping quarterback Anthony Colandrea from doing much on the move.

The Huskers can force takeaways – three against Michigan State, two against Maryland – but the Ducks are capable of getting their running game moving a bit to take the pressure off the passing game.

And about the quarterback situation, yes, Bob Chesney and the UCLA defense pitched a gem last week. But the week before that, Raiola stepped in and threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns in a brilliant fill-in performance for Moore against USC.

Nebraska vs Oregon Prediction, Betting Lines

This is too fluid to be definitive – Oregon might rotate quarterbacks no matter who starts – but this will be more on the Duck defense. It’ll be fantastic against the Nebraska running game, and that will be enough.

Oregon is 3-0 when allowing fewer than 140 yards on the ground, and Nebraska managed just 128 against Indiana. This won’t be pretty, but it’ll be a fascinating late-night battle with a few more points than you might expect.
