The difficult plays haven’t always been Clemson’s biggest problem. For Dabo Swinney, the frustration is how often his team has stumbled over the simple ones.

As the Tigers prepare to host Charleston Southern on Saturday, Swinney is looking for evidence that an open week helped eliminate the mistakes keeping his team from sustaining drives and finishing opportunities.

“We’re making some easy stuff really hard. We’re making some hard stuff look easy,” Swinney said Wednesday on WCCP 105.5 FM The Roar. “And we’ve got to fix that.”

Clemson enters the matchup at 3-2, with five conference games still ahead. Before returning to ACC play, the Tigers have an opportunity to establish the consistency their head coach believes has been missing.

Swinney said reviewing film has become a lengthy process because seemingly every play contains something that needs correcting. Even when most players handle their responsibilities, a single missed assignment can undo the work around it.

“We need to get better. We need to dominate somebody. And the way you do that is you get 11 guys doing the job,” he said.

The Miami loss remains a source of frustration. Swinney identified possessions just before halftime and to open the third quarter as chances Clemson should have converted into points. Those missed opportunities helped prevent the Tigers from putting more pressure on the Hurricanes.

With a young quarterback and other players gaining experience, Swinney recognizes that mistakes will happen. His patience is thinner when the same problems resurface.

“So, there’s going to be some mistakes, but we can’t make the same mistakes,” he said.

Saturday offers Clemson a chance to turn those lessons into a complete performance against Charleston Southern (3-3).

“My expectation is, we play our best game of the [season] this week,” Swinney said. “We’ve got five conference games left, and there’s a lot on the line, and we’ve got to play our best football down the stretch.”

Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for noon on ACC Network.
