MIAMI, Fla. – It’s been over a month since it was first reported that former Miami Hurricanes tight end Alex Bauman was filing for a temporary restraining order to return to college football for a fifth season and the patience has paid off.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Judge Julia B. Owdzieg of the Washtenaw County Probate Court granted the Red Bank (N.J.) native an injunction to enter the transfer portal. The following day, the Michigan Wolverines reportedly planned to add Bauman and former Boise State cornerback Jeremiah Earby to the roster. Neither player has appeared on the team’s website yet.

Bauman spent the 2025 college football season with the Hurricanes and won the starting tight end job over then-sophomore Elija Lofton. He caught 18 passes for 166 yards and scored a lone touchdown against the SMU Mustangs while playing in all 16 games (11 starts). Bauman was part of the Hurricanes’ 2025 transfer portal class, alongside quarterback Carson Beck, running back CharMar Brown, and wide receiver CJ Daniels, among others.

After three remarkable years at Tulane, the former three-star recruit took on bigger challenges at Coral Gables.

Bauman proved to be a versatile tight end who can block and catch passes. However, he’s not entirely thought of fondly among the Hurricanes fan base. In the National Championship game, facing a 10-7 deficit before halftime, Bauman failed to block Indiana’s former defensive end Mikali Kamar, who blocked Dylan Joyce’s punt return; then Hoosiers linebacker Isaiah Jones recovered for a touchdown.

The Hurricanes lost 27-21 and the former tight end’s collegiate career appeared to be over. He wasn’t selected in this year’s NFL Draft and ran a 5.07 40-yard dash in the program’s Pro Day at Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility.

Bauman has an opportunity for redemption, but in the Big 10 conference. The Wolverines are currently 3-2 (Big 10 0-2), coming off back-to-back losses to No. 17 Iowa and Minnesota. Bauman’s debut would likely come as early as next Saturday against the reigning champion Hoosiers at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines’ offense has limited production, outside of wide receivers Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan. Both tight ends Hogan Hansen and Jalen Hoffman have fewer than 10 catches and 50 yards each. Bauman’s experience as a blocker and playmaker could provide a boost for the Wolverines, who are on the brink of falling behind in the Big 10.

It’s just one of several cases causing havoc in college football.
